iPhone 4S Batterygate Fix Now Available; Yellowgate Still Unfixed

Eager Apple fans who purchased the iPhone 4S when it launched suffered either Yellowgate and/or Batterygate, while those who opted to just upgrade their compatible iPhone to the new iOS 5 suffered from Batterygate.  Quick recap: Yellowgate is the yellow screen on the iPhone 4S (predominant in black version of iPhone 4S) while Batterygate is the fast battery-draining bug of the 4S or iOS 5 device.

They released a fix for the battery problem, iOS 5.0.1 in beta, when Apple finally admitted that some location-based features of the iOS 5 did drain the battery.  But early installers were quite disappointed because the beta update didn’t do anything for their device and some even suffered more trouble, as their devices failed to work at all.

Apple now formally released the 5.0.1 software update, and it seems like the bugs in the beta version were fixed.  Some users reported that their battery life improved while others didn’t even see any difference.

The update includes:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

But if the update still doesn’t fix your battery problem you can do these simple steps: turn off automatic time zones, disable location settings, disable notifications, avoid pushing e-mail, and turn off Siri if you’re not using it.  But if you’ve done everything and your device still loses juice as fast as lightning, better bring in your device and have it checked out or replaced.

Other iPhone 4S users reported that they had audio problems when making or receiving calls, so they had their device replaced and that fixed the problem.  As for the Yellowgate problem, consumers are still suffering from it and the glue theory.  Apple support keeps telling people the yellow tint will disappear after the glue dries, but it may just be a load of hogwash since the yellow tint did not disappear, even after a two-week drying period.  People are still venting on Apple’s discussion page and users came to a conclusion that Apple is using different screen suppliers to accommodate the demand, with cheaper materials.

If Batterygate and Yellowgate don’t really bother you or you’ve gotten used to it, you can just have fun with your device with these neat tricks.

From 9to5mac: Autocorrect Keyboard Bar

  • Download iBackupBot
  • Backup your iPhone/iPod in iTunes
  • Open iBackupBot and find the backup, then load it.
  • Find Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist and open the file. (if your software isn’t registered you’ll have to press cancel and then it will open)
  • Add in the following code: <key>KeyboardAutocorrectionLists</key><string>YES</string>
  • Save your modifications, and then restore from backup from within iBackupbot.

And from FunkySpaceMonkey: Panorama Mode

  • Download iBackupBot from the official website. ( Mac and Windows )
  • Plugin your iPhone and back it up via iTunes
  • Open iBackupBot and find the backup that you just made via iTunes. Select and load it.
  • Find Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist
  • Now you need to add a key to this .plist file. Open the file ( on mac, it just works *wink, wink* ) and near the bottom, add a key ( EnableFirebreak ) and a string ( YES )
  • Save your modifications, and right from iBackupBot restore your iPhone with the modified iTunes backup
  • That’s it. Open your camera app, tap on options and there it is.
