The Road To Secured Apps Starts with Awareness

I know most of us have downloaded apps that were either useless or caused some problems with our devices.  That’s why I stick to apps with good ratings, or those made by popular brands.  But we can’t always avoid these malicious apps, and that’s the frustrating part of being a mobile device owner, because some people just love to wreak havoc.  So how can we be sure if an app is legit?

Denim Group, developer of secure software which helps organizations assess and mitigate risk with existing software, launched one of the industry’s first secure software development e-Learning courses on its ThreadStrong Learning Platform, focused on mobile application development.

“Mobile applications provide users with the ability to perform tasks that were formerly consigned to the desktop such as mobile banking, shopping and travel planning, allowing a wealth of information to flow through or be stored on the device,” said John Dickson, Denim Group principal.

“Mobile applications are also being used to give customers and employees access to useful data instantly. However, the same channels that an application uses to communicate with the enterprise can expose a massive amount of data to unauthorized users that can then be used maliciously.”

Courses available for mobile app development are Overview of Mobile Application Security – New, which runs for 30 minutes and Authentication and Authorization for iOS/Android Mobile Devices – New, which also runs for 30 minutes.  The above courses are immediately available, and in-depth secure mobile training classes will be added to the curriculum in the following months.

Aside from the e-Learning for mobile course, ThreadStrong also offers a variety of other secure application programming courses that cover topics such as Secure Coding for Java and .NET applications, Threat Modeling, Software Security Remediation Basics as well as a publicly available class explaining Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF).  Licensing for ThreadStrong is handled on a per-user basis, with discounts applied to incremental numbers of users, and includes unlimited access to all available course materials for each licensed user.  Users can return to review the training classes even after training is complete to refresh their knowledge.

Denim Group is also offering webinars regarding app security.  They’re presenting Securing Inherited Applications: Phase 1 – Gathering Information today, The Self-Healing Cloud: Protecting Applications and Infrastructure with Automated Virtual Patching on November 17, and Securing Inherited Applications: Phase 2 – Risk Ranking on December 2.  But if you’re not into learning through video tutorials and you want the real thing, Denim Group now offers public training courses.  The Designing, Building & Testing Secure Applications on Apple/iOS Mobile Devices course is available on December 2 and 9 for $725.  It is a one-day course from 8:30AM – 4:30 PM.  Slots are limited so if you are interested, you can register here.

Denim Group’s new courses highlight the growing demand for consumer and industry education around mobile security, something every security company can benefit from.  The mobile world is a new frontier for everyone to explore, even cyber-attackers.  Denim Group is taking a rather literal approach towards raising awareness, leveraging the web to do so in a most convenient format.  Other companies interested in educating the public include Symantec and Lookout, both of which have expressed their goals in making the end user more knowledgable around the mobile security realm.
