Google Mobile Initiative GoMo Launches in Mobile. Where Else?

The number of people using mobile devices keeps increasing because everybody wants to stay connected while on the go. Google sees yet another opportunity in this growing trend beyond search, mobile OS and social network, and organized GoMo, a service that helps owners make their website mobile friendly.

“Millions more people are using mobile devices to get online every day. Does your business have a mobile-friendly site? If not—or if you’re not sure—you’ve come to the right place to get started,” says GoMo.

With GoMo, users can learn more about the mobile web, test how their site looks and works on a mobile and browser environment. GoMo offers a catalogue of companies to help clients improve their mobile usability such as Atmio, Duda Mobile and iLoop Mobile. GoMo encourages companies to get personalized recommendations on top of providing them expert developers as a helping hand. This is also good for developers as it serves as some sort of promotion.

As for Google, this gives them more space to serve ads and bring in more revenue, primarily because it’s encouraging of mobile web browsing instead of mobile apps. If everything goes well, Google can play up its benefits as the only comprehensive company that marketers need for their advertising goals. But the initiative is just getting started. We can’t really tell for sure if Google’s little play on words, launching a mobile initiative in Mobile, will take off beyond the Gulf Shore.

GoMo itself does not do the personalization and heavy lifting for websites, instead they suggest companies that can do it for you. If you’re looking to try out the service at no cost, then you can avail of their “Mobilize your business” service. They assist in the development for mobile landing page for free. Should you decide to convert to the full version of the mobile environment, then you’ll have to cash out.

“Just because you can see your desktop site on a mobile phone doesn’t mean it’s mobile-friendly. Mobile sites are designed for the small screen, with the needs of mobile users in mind. A mobile-friendly site can help your business connect with customers and drive conversions,” adds GoMo.

Initially, GoMo heads to Alabama and starts the project with local businesses there. They will be mobilizing local businesses and give them advises straight from experts.  One company represented at the 3-day event is Mobify, a platform for converting your desktop website to a mobile website without much extra effort.  Mobify’s goal is to recreate the desktop web experience on mobile devices, giving end users more functionality and familiarity on their handsets, and providing monetization options similar to what you already have set up on your desktop website.

If you’re a retail site, then driving purchases is still as important on a tablet as it is on a laptop.  Site publishers that rely on AdWords can still take advantage of their monetization format using Mobify’s platform as well.  Mobify’s done some interesting work for some high profile clients, including Starbucks and Threadless, with plans through initiatives like GoMo to extend beyond the enterprise and large business space.

“With a booming tech industry and citizens who love their mobile phones, Mobile, Alabama, is the perfect place to start getting America’s businesses on the mobile web. From November 14 to 16, Google will be Mobilizing Mobile. Local businesses can get a FREE mobile website and learn about mobile strategy directly from the experts.”
