NexGen, Fusion-io for Upgraded SAN Offering

NexGen Storage has forged a partnership with flash-based hardware acceleration solutions maker Fusion-io to combine the latter’s technology with its own.  The company said the ioMemory powered NexGen n5 Storage System, a hybrid mid-range SAN that’s designed to cut bottlenecks in virtualized environments, can cut overheads related to storage operating expenses by up to 90 percent.

This is credited to its patent pending Phased Data Reduction technology.

NexGen claims that the upgraded offering taps Fusion’s low-latency performance and extends it to every box connected to the SAN, while also ensuring high available thanks to support for VMware HA, VMware FT, Microsoft Hyper-V Quick Migration and Live Migration.

“NexGen Storage has architected a unique mid-market SAN solution that takes full advantage of ioMemory’s performance potential,” said Will Hall, vice president of OEM sales at Fusion-io.

“By eliminating the performance bottlenecks of solid-state drives with ioMemory, NexGen delivers outstanding SAN performance control and efficiency. Our collaboration with NexGen enables customers to not only meet their business objectives, but also unlock the capabilities of their data center to discover new possibilities.”

An OEM agreement is included in the partnership between NexGen and Fusion-io, through which the latter will integrate its technology into every n5 in addition to launching joint sales and marketing initiatives promoting the product.

NexGen is still a new player in this market, considering it came out of stealth just earlier this month. The n5 Storage System is its only offering, so the partnership with Fusion-io is a very subsiatial milestone in the startup’s short history.

In turn, Fusion-io also had a few significant updates recently. The company had seen a lot of success with its IPO, and it decided to leverage this momentum by selling $350 million in stock. The company itself  is selling off only $100 million while the remainder comes from its investors.
