These Big Data Events will Unlock the Possibilities of Unstructured Data

Big data – datasets that grow so large that they become awkward to work with using on-hand database management tools, says Wikipedia. This particularly new area of information technology includes capture, storage, search, sharing, analytics and visualizing. Big data is also what’s responsible for emerging trends such as business analytics and intelligence, and has played a major role in a variety of industries, from preventing diseases to combating crime. Gartner predicts that data will grow by 800 percent in five years, and 80 percent of which is unstructured.  That leaves an immense amount of data just floating around, ready to be plucked, reworked and leveraged for a smarter tomorrow.

Another indication of the growing impact of big data trends is an increase of related events and conferences.  One of the more notable upcoming events is the O’Reilly Strata Online conference, which will take place on December 7, 2011 from 9:00 to 10:30 am US Pacific Standard Time.

From David Campbell from Microsoft Corp.’s Server and Tool Business: “Big Data is all the rage. While the big data systems, patterns, and value were initially demonstrated at Petabyte scale with large scale Internet services, Big Data is applicable in any organization, regardless of organization size or volume of data.

“In fact, many early adopters of Big Data technologies in the commercial space are seeing significant top and bottom line enhancements through their use of these emerging technologies. The ultimate question is around new business value gets created out of the abundant ‘ambient data’ produced by existing and emerging IT systems. How do we transform these raw data into new knowledge that matters for the business in an efficient fashion?”

In the West End, we have Predictive Analytics World, an event packed with top predictive analytics experts, practitioners, authors and business thought leaders. The discussions will center on deployed predictive analytics. It will run from November 30 to December 1, 2011 in London, United Kingdom.

Going back to the US, The Big Data Effect will also take place on December 7, 2011 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Speakers include Keith Collins, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, SAS Gil Elbaz, Founder and CEO, Factual Ping Li, Partner, Accel Partners Luke Lonergan, CTO, VP and Co-Founder, Greenplum, an EMC Company Anand Rajaraman, SVP, Walmart Global E-Commerce; Head, @WalmartLabs.

Big data conferences are indeed significant because we’re only at the initial phase of making better sense of the large amounts of unstructured data that we have. A step towards betterment will open doors for business opportunities, sound strategies and the like.  It’s an increasingly innovative space, and one that’s quite fascinating for the technology realm, ready at the helm of startups, new jobs and a brighter future.
