Broadcom’s Vision of 2012: More Products, Faster Speed

Networking solutions maker Broadcom will release products based on the IEEE 802.11ac wireless technology in late 2012, a few months after the standard’s ratification sometime in mid last year.

The most significant improvement 802.11ac introduces over its predecessors is a major performance increase, with speeds upwards of 1GB/s. PCMag’s Mark Hachman made a comparison of the upcoming standard with existing wireless tech.

“From a technical perspective, a typical 3×3 array of 802.11ac antennas using an 80-MHz channel should, within an interference-free room, transmit over 1 Gbits/s. That’s about three times the throughout of 802.11n, which can transmit about 300 Mbits/s under the same conditions. Using 160-MHz channels, Patel said, the throughput could push 1.2 Gbits/s or slightly higher.

Speedier wireless infrastructure is becoming a necessity as users stream more and more data via a growing number of end devices. One of the biggest drivers is high quality video, which will account for over 90 percent of the average household’s traffic by 2015.

Broadcom plans to address growing bandwidth consumption with the new offerings, alongside with the mobile trend. During a San Francisco event company officials demonstrated the 7425A1 application processor, a chip that will be built-into routers and has the capacity to stream content to multiple devices at the same time. There’s also an interactive element, thanks to an OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics processor that lets users drag and drop video around the screen. Broadcom is likely to expand on this angle with more announcements at this year’s CES.

The company has put an emphasis on investing in new technologies lately.  Last week Broadcom unveiled the BCM20730 65 reference architecture designed for gadgets and Bluetooth-compatible devices. The firm says chips based on the technology have the capacity to extend a mouse or a keyboard’s battery life to a full decade.
