Your Ultimate Guide to CES 2012

The International Consumer Electronics Show is an annual technology-related trade show owned and produced by the Consumer Electronics Association.  It is held each January in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, US. and this year promises to be a milestone for connected devices and the mobile ecosystem.  We’ll be covering the event from every angle, so be sure to regularly check back on SiliconAngle’s blog for analysis and news.

Interested attendees can still register and pay the necessary fees before the event officially starts on January 10, Tuesday and ran until January 13, 2012.

This Year’s Theme

This year’s theme is leaning towards connected devices.  Companies want all electronic devices to be linked in some form or another.  We’ll see a push towards Smart TVs, Smart homes, tablets, ultrabooks, and of course smartphones.

What To Expect

Here are a few things to look forward to seeing at the event:

  • Smart TVs – LG is bringing their 55” OLED Google TV; Roku is bringing their Streaming Stick, Lenovo is launching their IdeaTV of LeTV, and Stream TV Networks is bringing 3D TV that doesn;t need 3D glasses.
  • Smartphones – Sony is said to bringing a new Xperia Ar, Motorola is bringing the Droid 4 and LG is bringing an Intel-powered smartphone.
  • Tablets, Laptops/Ultrabooks – Toshiba will be showcasing the world’s thinnest and lightest Tablet 10.1-inch wide including the ultra-PC-2012 books in the world’s thinnest and lightest 13.3-inch wide,  Acer is unveiling the Iconia Tab A700,  a 10″ tablet powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, and Qualcomm will be showing ultrabooks powered with ARM chipsets.

Who To Watch Out For

  • Microsoft already announced that this will be their last CES so it can be expected that they would make their exit from the show quite spectacular.
  • Intel wants to enter the mobile sector as they are launching Medfield, Intel’s single core chip for tablets and smartphones pegged to come out by the second quarter and Clover Trail, either single or dual core Atom chips better suited for tablets.
  • Broadcom is all for connected devices as they are planning to unveil an Android TV and their first 5G WiFi-based 802.11ac chips.
  • HTC is bringing their first LTE device dubbed as HTC Thunderbolt
  • Samsung is secretive as to what they’ll be bringing at this year’s CES, they tweeted: “Another day closer to #CES2012http://smsn.us/ces2012. We have a few things up our sleeves that you don’t want to miss ;-)”
  • LG is launching a 55” OLED TV, a Google TV and Intel-powered smartphones
