EnterpriseDB Launches New PostgreSQL DBaaS

PostgreSQL database solution provider EnterpriseDB debuted Postgres Plus Cloud Database for Amazon Web Services and HP Cloud Compute, Hewlett-Packard’s still-in-development PaaS. Cloud Bees and Engine Yard will also offer support for the solution, the company said in a released statement.

EnterpriseDB’s newest product is a so called database-as-a-service, enabling customers to leverage a more agile and cost-efficient platform than traditional on-premise alternatives. Postgres Plus offers another set of advantages that its maker is offering, in addition to the ones provided by its cloud backbone. It only requires an abstracted point-and-click setup and ships with Oracle and ACID computability, as well with a lot of automation covering backup & recovery, failover, load balancing and scaling. It’s currently available in either one of two versions, running PostgreSQL 9.1 or Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.0.

“Postgres Plus Cloud Database is the only solution on the market today that makes deploying new instances of PostgreSQL or Postgres Plus Advanced Server easy in any environment,” said Ed Boyajian, President and CEO of EnterpriseDB.  “And, through our partnerships with industry leaders CloudBees, Engine Yard, HP and OpenStack, customers will have numerous ways to take advantage of PostgreSQL ‘elastically’ on multiple cloud platforms.”

PostgreSQL and EnterpriseDB had a couple of updates in the past quarter.  Version 9.1 of the database software was released in September last year, introducing a number of improvements such as synced replication and various command tweaks.

Earlier, EnterpriseDB announced the Postgres Enterprise Manager. The monitoring app is optimized for the DB, which accounts for a very big part of the overall value prop. Customers that pay the subscription receive more server-side visibility and an analytics function, which tracks historic activity to identify usage trends in a deployment. There are also several additional features bundled together with Enterprise Manager.
