VMware CTO Talks Node.js, Mobile Development [Video]

The open-source Node.js server-side JavaScript development environment was the spotlight of VMware’s keynote at this week’s Node Summit 2012. During VMware’s visit to theCube, VMware CTO Steve Herrod talked about the possibilities of enterprises in mobile development space (see entire video interview below).

In a conversation with SiliconAngle’s Founder and CEO John Furrier, Herrod talked about the advantage and importance of node.js. It turns out that a lot of people like to program in low level programming and Java programing, and node.js extends the capabilities of these programming languages.  There has been a lot of interest from developers to create in these areas as it provides adoptability, flexibility and more importantly, support for Google’s V8 JavaScript engine.

VMware sees Node as an important technology for mobile cloud computing platform for enterprises. During his interview, Herrod talked about leveraging Node.js to deliver powerful and functional tools to work more effectively and to ensure the exclusive quality of the end product and providing better security.

Herrod evaluated VMware’s potential based on the quality of their Node.js application or service, the market potential for the company, and their overall innovation and vision. He sees enterprises can scale their standalone applications or windows applications to mobile web based application with the help of scalable and multithreading approach of node.js.

Herrod said the relatively new open-source programming language Node.js is catching on among developers and notably among enterprise developers. He talked how Node.js is enabling the creation of real-time, high performance, scalable, networked applications.

VMware was some of the few companies to recognize the potential of Node.js and has committed significant resources towards its ongoing development within the open source community. Herrod spoke why VMware is focused on Node.js and see what Node.js and other open source technology together can provide for developers who want a compelling PaaS solution.

Node does things a bit differently than other programming platforms. The VMware’s CTO talked particular advantages of Node as far as platform-as-a-service cloud computing and re-use of this technology at every level – browser, back end & database.

In the concluded note, Herrod talked about the next VMworld event, the company’s first ever billion sales in quarter and the possibilities of some new important announcement at the event.
