The Dad That Killed His Daughter’s Laptop
What do you get when you combine a teenager in angst, Facebook and a parent with a gun? Yes, someone will get shot, but in this case the casualty was not a person, but the laptop.
Tommy Jordan posted the video “Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen” on YouTube last week in response to his daughter’s post on Facebook. The video featured Jordan sitting on a lawn chair holding a copy of his daughter’s letter and a cigarette with a .45 holstered on his belt. The said video immediately went viral, garnering both positive and negative feedback from parents and children.
On YouTube, Jordan explained his actions,
“My daughter thought it would be funny/rebellious/cool to post on her Facebook wall just how upset she was and how unfair her life here is; how we work her too hard with chores, never pay her for chores, and just in general make her life difficult.
She chose to share this with the entire world on Facebook and block her parent’s from seeing it. Well, umm… she failed. As of the end of this video, she won’t have to worry anymore about posting inappropriate things on Facebook…Maybe a few kids can take something away from this… If you’re so disrespectful to your parents and yourself as to post this kind of thing on Facebook, you’re deserving of some tough love. Today, my daughter is getting a dose of tough love.”
Lat’s back up a bit: if you haven’t watched the video and your asking why he killed his daughter’s laptop, the reason is simple, after upgrading his daughter’s computer to the specifications she wanted, spending $130 in doing so just to make her happy, he found his daughter’s angry post on Facebook about them. Apparently, this isn’t the first time his daughter did something like this; he already warned his daughter that things will get a lot worse if it happened again. His daughter obviously didn’t listen.
Jordan also posted the video on Facebook stating that “Today was probably the most disappointing day of my life as a father and I don’t know how to correct the situation. Since I can’t seem to make any headway with my daughter on Facebook, I chose instead to remedy the problem permanently.”
Some people argue that it’s the daughter’s right to vent out her anger and frustration on Facebook and putting bullets in her laptop was just uncalled for. But most parents and kids side with Jordan, stating that it’s a matter of respect and what he did was right–his daughter deserved the punishment.
My opinion: If it’s the daughter’s right to post angry messages towards her parents on Facebook, then her dad also has the right to post a video about her on Facebook – the freedom of speech goes both ways.
Lesson: Do not talk smack about your parents, think of everything they have done for you before saying anything that you would regret. And seriously, using Facebook or any other form of social networking sites to talk smack about your parents isn’t wise – especially if your dad’s an IT.
