Fusion-io Boosts Webair’s Cloud

Flash storage provider Fusion-io recently released another one of its case studies, this time about how ioMemory helped data center operator Webair address the growing demands of its customers. Webair previously used traditional disk-based storage systems throughout its facilities in New York, Los Angeles, Montreal and Amsterdam.

“One of the key factors in our decision was breaking through the speed barriers typically found in existing cloud environments. We have found that with Fusion-io, our cloud database servers are significantly outperforming traditional physical configurations. With Fusion ioMemory, we can now offer the benefits of the cloud to industries and applications that previously would have been challenging to support at peak performance in the cloud,” said Sagi Brody, the CTO of Webair.

Datacenter operators are facing a market where a lot of pressure is placed them from the performance and availability cloud providers manage to deliver. This gap, and the way new disruptive technologies help to bridge it and accelerate cloud adoption, was one of the highlights of theCube analysis on Hewlett-Packard’s Gen8 launch. Fusion-io also plays a role in the grand scheme of things, as does the rest of the flash industry. That includes one of the newest and largest entries: EMC, which set its eyes on this market with Project Lightning.

Project Lightning, bearing the official name VFCache, is a specialized PCIe flash card.

Going back to Fusion-io, the company is clinging tightly to its current position, and an influx of orders underscores this agenda.  Last week the company released another case study which explained how Host Europe GmbH – a public cloud provider that specializes in hosting games and associated data- achieved a rather significant performance boost thanks to its technology. The cloud subsidiary of the Host Europe Group serves approximately one million customers.
