Big Data Is PC-Like Revolution – Biggest Shift In Decades

I was recently asked about why I’m so into big data.  As SiliconANGLE prepares to do our live SiliconANGLE.tv show at #stratconf with The CUBE, I wanted to share a post that I made on Google + this morning in response to this article on quantum computing.

Data is the biggest thing to hit the industry since the PC.  PC changed the world now the Data movement is doing the same.  I would argue on the same scale.

As background in big data you have to review the best research report on the market on the market share of the players in big data.  Link to research here.

Computing has always been limited by processing power which changed as “Moores Law” became more than a reality (see Intel for Moore’s Law).  Anyway with cloud and the massive performance increase in “computing” we can now process anything in terms of digital bits (binary mean either zero or one).  Here is the big issue:  Data is now the bottleneck.  Processor will sit idle while it waits for humans and machines to get their act together to send more data… Big problem and opportunity:  Data is the bottleneck.

Efforts to create dimensional data and new structures and unstructured data is at the center of the innovation.  Hadoop and new platform then apps will emerge fast.  That is why VCs are pouring ton of money into the sector.

To put this into context – think of computers before Steve Jobs invented Apple. All we had at the time were mainframes and terminals.  Steve Jobs and Bill Gates (aka personal computing & software moment) unleashed a massive boom for multiple generations.

We are in a similar position with Data.  The old way of Data is broken (think mainframe in my Jobs analogy) and the big data trend is a massive revolution in society that takes on a PC like shift.  It’s freaking big.

Personal data, open data, global data, geo data, application data, gesture data, etc are making changing the old guard of data, server, storage, and networking business.  More importantly “open” is real and open source software is the accelerant to fuel the new shift  for new Data Models.

Trust me it’s more than big.  It’s the best thing to happen to the industry since the early 80s.

Via la Data Revolution.
