Cloudera Steps Up Contributions to Big Data Ecosystem

Cloudera, the first commercial distributer of the Apache Hadoop data munching engine, announced that it had added a certification program that will run as an independent extension of Cloudera University. The company – currently busy making the most out of what can earnestly be called its head start in the industry – has been giving back to the community in a big way. This contribution arrived in the form of a free partner pack, as well as what is  known as the Cloudera University since October, a collection of training courses that focus entirely on Hadoop. It’s quite notable that back then the official figures pointed at around 7,000 CU graduates, and now Cloudera says that number has already reached the 10,000 milestone. The analytics firm revealed this info not too long after the availability of two other certifications: Cloudera Certified Administrator for Apache Hadoop (CCAH) and Cloudera Certified Developer for Apache Hadoop (CCDH.) Each covers exactly what the respective title suggests, and the exams will be available to anyone, regardless of whether or not they’ve attended Cloudera University. Geeks will be able to take the tests in either one of over 5,000 Pearson VUE testing centers spread across 165 countries starting May 1, for a fee of $295 each.

“Having certified Hadoop expertise is one of the most sought after and highly paid skill sets in the IT job market today,” said Julie Lockner, senior analyst and vice president, Data Management Solutions at ESG. “Cloudera University’s newly expanded certification program puts another stake in the ground, continuing Cloudera’s industry leadership in providing the Hadoop certification and training that is a rapidly growing need in the Big Data arena.”

In addition to the actual certification program, Cloudera is offering up a ‘reference’ service that employers can use to see if a candidate’s associated credentials are legitimate.  It’s the latest in a growing initiative from several enterprises like IBM to increase awareness of big data’s commercial demands through education programs.
