Talend’s Open-Source Approach to Hadoop is Working [VIDEO]

Yves de Montcheuil, the head of marketing for Talend, stepped into theCube with John Furrier and Wikibon’s Dave Vellante to talk a bit about his company, its announcements from the Strata Conference and the big data market in general.

He started by providing a bit of background on the data management firm. It was founded six years ago in France, with the “promise of democratizing data integration.” Montcheuil said that there were no open-source solutions in this particular market at the time, and Talend’s two founders saw a big opportunity.

As the company grew it started to branch off to other areas such as app management, business process integration and today, Hadoop. Responding to a question raised by Valletta he notes that big (i.e. unstructured) data in genera doesn’t change the so-called single version of the truth within the enterprise, instead supplements it and removes a big portion of the restrictions of more traditional data warehousing environments.

Around half way through the interview the conversation slipped back to Talend. Montcheuil mentions that his company raised approximately $62 million to date, and also shares some of his insight on managing an open-source business model. According to him the whole trick is to achieve a balance between “what you give to the community, and what you sell to the community:” maintain the value of freely available software editions and code contributions, while also focusing on the commercial solutions that actually pay the bills and sustain Talend’s business.

Later the conversation bounces back to Hadoop, and the Strata conference where the interview was held. Talend had a couple of big announcements at the gathering about its relationship with Horton, and the new Talend Open Studio for Big Data. The offering will be the core data integration component in HortonWork’s Hadoop platform.
