Juniper Simplifies the Network, Shows Off QFabric

Juniper Networks is facing increased pressure from the market to catch up with its biggest competitors, and one approach the company has invested a lot in is the whole idea of collapsing the traditional networking layers. Simplicity has been the big emphasis on the bottom line, though not only with QFabric.

The company revealed the latest result of a partnership with Nokia’s networking division: the Integrated Packet Transport Network solution, which features Juniper Networks PTX Series switches and Nokia Siemens Networks hiT 7300 on the optic layer. There’s an emphasis on economics and of course integration; the infrastructure can be managed via standardized data and control interfaces.

“To improve the economics of core network provisioning, service providers must reduce infrastructure and operating costs while improving the efficiency of service delivery and the user experience. Service providers measure success on building and implementing a more effective operating model for their core transport networks, which is the very foundation of our new packet-transport solution with Nokia Siemens Networks,” says Daniel Hua, senior vice president of engineering, Juniper Networks.

Getting back to QFabric, a newer announcement from the company showcases the performance of the solution in a benchmark test Juniper commissioned.  Network Test examined how the 1,536 10GE ports in Spirent Communications’ networking infrastructure perform when managed as a single device, and recorded a multicast traffic rate of 15.3 terabits per second. That’s approximately 3.4 million HD movies streamed at the same time according to Juniper; a fairly fitting analogy considering that media will account for a very big portion of big data traffic in the near future.

Alongside economics and streamlining the network, Juniper also set its eyes on security. It acquired Mykonos for $80 million, a security firm that has a very interesting angle on blocking out hackers.
