Double Fine Adventure Crowdfunds $3.44M in Funding with KickStarter

Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site for creative projects, pooled a donation of $3,335,265 for Double Fine Adventure–crowdfunded and fan-driven, downloadable, point-and-click adventure game, making it their most funded project up-to-date.

Kickstarter’s goal was to raise $400,000 for Double Fine but hit that in just eight hours since the fundraiser launch, it already achieved that and gotten $1 million in just 24 hours.  Double Fine now holds the record for the fastest and most funded project in Kickstarter’s portfolio.

And because of the amount of funding Double Fine generated, Kickstarter announced that the game will launch on Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android in addition to PC and the game will also receive full translations into French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

“I don’t want to say this is the end of the whole games industry as we know it — it’s not, and it’s not a replacement of all publishers… but it does mean that if you’ve ever been told your part a a niche market, you can make things happen for yourself,” said Double Fine designer Tim Schafer during a special event on Ustream.

Schafer also announced that an additional $110,000, from premium backers such as Ticket to Ride developer Days of Wonder and Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos, brought Double Fine Adventure’s funding up to $3.44 million.

If you’re still at a lost trying to figure out what crowdfunding is, it’s this simple: people can commit as little as $1 to $5 to fund a project, you’re not actually shelling out cash, they only take money from you if they reach their target amount of donations.  So the point of Kickstarter is to kick-start your project and your part is to entice people to fund your project.  Once you get your target funding, your dream will turn to reality.
