Yummly Gets a Yummy $6M in Series A Funding

Yummly, a top recipe search platform, has closed a $6 million Series A funding round led by Physic Ventures, with contributions from Unilever Corporate Ventures, Harrison Metal Capital, First Round Capital, Intel Capital, The Harvard Common Press, and angel investors.

“In less than two years, Yummly is now attracting more than 4 million unique visitors each month. I am thrilled at our progress in such a short time—end user response has already far exceeded our wildest expectations,” says David Feller, CEO and cofounder at Yummly.

“Buoyed by the support of Physic Ventures and Unilever, we now look forward to focusing on the continued expansion and evolution of the Yummly platform to become an invaluable digital resource for foodies and cooks of all skill levels.”

The new round of funding will be used to expand their team, scale their marketing efforts, and add new features and functionality to their site.  Andy Donner of Physic Ventures and Andy Porteous of Unilever will join Yummly’s board of directors.

“Innovative solutions that help people cook and eat healthy, flavorful meals are core to Physic Ventures’ mission of investing in keeping people healthy,” said Physic Ventures partner Andy Donner. “We believe that Yummly has the opportunity to assist both experienced cooks and newcomers in the kitchen by providing a comprehensive digital platform encompassing meal planning, procurement, preparation and participation.”

Physic Ventures is a San Francisco-based capital firm that provide capital and support to entrepeneurs who are building exceptional science-based, consumer directed companies focused on health and sustainability. Unilever Corporate Ventures, on the other hand, is the European venture capital arm of Unilever that invests in early stage companies, which could become strategically relevant to Yummly, benefitting from access to Unilever’s assets and capabilities on an international scale. UV focuses their investment in: health and vitality, personal care, digital marketing, novel foods, and technology that could be deployed to help Unilever’s sustainability mission.

Yummly was launched in April 2010 and cofounded by Feller and Vadim Geshel.  As of today, Yummly is the only food and recipe platform that aims to understand recipes from across the Internet and intuitively match them with their users’ tastes.

It’s Yummly’s flagship technology that makes it a leading search platform, and has great potential in developing the personalized sides of meal-planning.

“At its core, Yummly is the intersection of food, data and technology. Everything we do is based on that core, so you could say it’s our big data strategy,” says Yummly founder David Feller.

“Yummly employs proprietary algorithms that enable us to find recipes on the web, understand them in ways that have never been done before and intuitively deliver personalized recommendations for our users. In the future, it will enable many more cool things – from expanded features for our users to powerful advertising solutions for CPG companies.”
