Quantum’s New Cloud-based Data Protection is More Flexible

Quantum is offering up a new cloud platform that’s designed to give clients a more flexible means of backing up their data. The company already has a strong portfolio and is building on that to pump in a lot of business into the new offering, including fast restores, data reduction of up to 95 percent and WAN-optimized replication.

Going a bit deeper into the new tools, there are a couple of interesting highlights to be found. For one, the new cloud-based service, also available as a hybrid solution, is based on the yet-to-be-released DXi V1000 virtual appliance, which will roll out into general availability next month. The dedupe solution eliminates the need for unnecessary  physical boxes and software, and is fairly easy to deploy, according to Quantum. It will be priced at $2,250 per TB.

Xerox is already making use of Quantum’s latest product, and provided a statement to go along with the public unveiling.

“When we sought a design for an efficient, flexible and optimized cloud backup and DR service beyond the enterprise, we looked for a platform that would be simple to deploy, provide best-in-class protection, and balance affordability with fast recovery time,” said Ken Stephens, senior vice president of Xerox Cloud Services. “Quantum’s products met this level of sophistication which we are able to offer as part of our cloud suite of services.”

The second interesting tidbit is that Quantum has set its eyes on expanding. Later this year it will OEM the data protection service to other cloud companies, and will also begin selling its ”own branded cloud-services.” This is definitely a big push for the company, seeking to broaden its influence across a booming ecosystem.
