HotLink Upgrade Extends Cross-Hypervisor vCenter

HotLink offers a solution called SuperVISOR for VMware, a rather appropriate title considering what it does. It extends vCenter in a way that transforms it into a centralized platform that can be used to manage multi-hypervisor environments, with support for not only VMware software but also Hyper-V, XenServer and other alternatives.

Today the company unveiled the newest version of its product, introducing three new features with the 1.5 release. A new tool lets admins manage snapshots in heterogeneous environments, who now also enjoy the same level of centralization when it comes to deploying templates. These can be rolled out across multiple hypervisors.

The third addition is vMotion support for the three major hypervisors other than vSphere.

“With the new release of HotLink SuperVISOR for VMware, we are providing the robustness needed to support critical workloads in a heterogeneous, dynamic environment. Ultimately, datacenters need tools that enable a consistent approach to managing all virtual workloads, and HotLink SuperVISOR for VMware 1.5 delivers exactly that – all inside VMware vCenter.”

SuperVISOR is a relatively new product that has only been out since VMware World 2011. V1.2 was released back in mid-December, and that update also brought a few significant changes with it: since then the software provides an interface for administration in the networking layer, and more metrics have been added directly within vCenter.

VMware is ahead in the virtualization race, at least in terms of market share, although it has been expanding beyond its core business lately. It looks like it will soon offer an enterprise-grade cloud storage service of its own sometime in the future, as well as what seems to be a re-purposed version of VMware View and a collaboration service put together.
