Google Drive Ready to Take On Dropbox Next Week

SiliconANGLE has been keeping its eyes on Google Drive, or GDrive, since the first rumor of the company releasing a cloud storage service surfaced.  This year, rumors about the Google cloud service reemerged and more speculation about its release and features came to light.  Early this month, news stated that Google will be launching the service sometime this month.  And finally, after years of waiting, Google is said to be launching GDrive next week.

A report from The Next Web states that the Dropbox rival is set and ready to take over the cloud storage scene as early as Tuesday next week.

Dropbox vs Google Drive

When you sign up for Dropbox, you get 2GB of free storage, which can be expanded by inviting people to use Dropbox.  Every successful invite earns you 500MB of free space, up to 16GB of free storage.  You can also upgrade to 50GB for $9.99/month or $99/year, 100GB for 19.99/month or $199/year, and 1TB for teams by paying $795 for five users and more for bigger groups.  But what people like about Dropbox is that you can access your data anytime anywhere, as long as you have a connected device.

So how can Google compete with Dropbox?  They’re said to be offering 5GB of free space upon sign up.  Plus, like Dropbox, all your Google Drive files are said to be accessible on multiple platforms such as Mac OS X, Windows, iOS and Android devices.  There’s also speculation that Google may offer incentives specific to Android users, like more free space or extra features.

We’ll just have to see if Google’s cloud offerings trump those offered by Dropbox.  If Google is able to deliver a better service, Dropbox may have to come up with even better incentives in order to keep their current userbase.

Curiously, though the launch of the Google Drive is said to be set for next week, the Google Drive page isn’t working.  I thought they’d be opening their doors for early adopters but hey, it’s still a week away.  Hopefully things will become clearer in the following days.
