Taming the Big Data Gorilla [Infographic]

Wikibon released a new infographic that lays out the value proposition behind Big Data and provides vivid example of real-world Big Data usecases.

Big data has certainly gotten “big,” and its growing at fast pace.  According to Google, the term’s popularity has increased by more than 1,200 percent in recent years, and there’s something to back up all the hype as well.

According to an earlier Wikibon study, Big Data software, hardware and services revenue is currently $5 billion and will top $50 billion in 2017. That’s great for vendors, and the underlining reason behind all the demand is just as advantageous for enterprises.

Already, big data is being leveraged across a number of industries, from networking where traffic is being analyzed for security purposes, to marketing where ads are becoming more and more targeted.  And this trend has long since extended to other areas: search, social media, and practically any field that involves interaction with consumers – not to mention scientific research.

The chart provides some extra statistics that demonstrate the scope of the big data movement rather well.   For instance, Facebook currently stores and works with 30 petabytes of user data to customize browsing experience, while Amazon recommends products to an equally formidable number of shoppers.
