Samsung Investigates Spontaneously Combusting Galaxy SIII
Today’s mobile news roundup features a burnt Samsung Galaxy SIII, Foxconn bragging about the next iPhone, and Nokia being left out of the Windows Phone upgrade.
Samsung responds to burnt Galaxy SIII
Samsung Electronics is currently investigating a burnt Galaxy SIII. In a forum, a consumer reported that “suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone.” Upon inspection, the user learned that the phone burned from the inside out, burned through the plastic and melted the case. The burnt phone was placed in a car mount which had no power supply that could’ve caused the burning.
Samsung is now investigating the matter and replaced the device.
“There have been recent online posts displaying pictures of a Samsung GALAXY SIII that appears to have heat-related damage at the bottom of the device. Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question,” Samsung said in their blog.
“Once the investigation is complete, we will be able to provide further details on the situation. We are committed to providing our customers with the safest products possible and are looking at this seriously.”
In other Samsung news, a Dutch court favored the South Korean company in their war against Apple Inc. A court in The Hague ordered Apple to pay damages for infringing a technical communications patent in some of their mobile devices, such as the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 and iPad 1 and 2. The amount of damages to be paid hasn’t been announced, as it will take a couple of months to determine that.
“In accordance with the ruling, we will seek adequate compensation for the damages Apple and its products have caused,” Samsung said in a statement.
Foxconn brags next iPhone will be the “Samsung killer”
During Hon Hai’s annual shareholders’ meeting, Foxconn leader Terry Gou bragged that the next iPhone coming this fall will “put Samsung’s Galaxy III to shame.” Gou also stated that they’ve partnered with Corning Inc., maker of Gorilla Glass, and there’s a high possibility that the next iPhone will be sporting a Gorilla Glass screen.
Gou made it clear that they despise Samsung and their strategies. They prefer dealing with Sharp, a Japanese company, over Samsung, a South Korean company. “I respect the Japanese and especially like their execution and communication styles,” Gou said, “Unlike the Koreans, they will not hit you from behind.”
Nokia’s Lumia phones can’t support Windows Phone upgrade
Coming this fall, Microsoft will be overhauling their smartphone operating system, but the change will be so drastic that it won’t be able to run on Nokia’s Lumia phones. The major change to their OS is in accordance with the launch of the Windows 8 to make their OS more streamlined.
“The reason a full update to the Windows Phone 8 platform is not possible [for current Lumia devices] is primarily due to the jump in hardware capability for future devices, which can’t be made available on existing hardware,” said Nokia spokesperson Doug Dawson.
Yes, Nokia is totally screwed. They focused on creating phones based on Windows Phone only to be told that their hardware cannot handle their upcoming overhaul. Lumia phones aren’t doing too well in the market, added with this fact, why would anyone buy a Nokia Lumia phone now?
