“Lost” Steve Jobs Interview Now Available on iTunes

A 70-minute interview with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dating back to 1995 is now available on iTunes for the first time.

Robert Cringley interview Jobs for a for a PBS special titled Triumph of the Nerds, which aired just two years before the visionary’s legendary return to Apple, and only included about 10 minutes of the film. The story is that Paul Sen, the director of the documentary, found the original footage in his garage shortly after Jobs’ passing and decided to share it with the world.

The film was played in Landmark theaters in November last year, and now users can rent it from iTunes for $3.99. Cringley elaborated on this seemingly unexplained content in his blog, writing that Apple deemed the footage “too controversial” and for that reason still refuses to promote it. The iTunes description reads:

“Candid, controversial and funny… the original and unedited interview with Steve Jobs, conducted by tech journalist and former Apple Inc. employee Robert X. Cringely, from 1995 when Steve Jobs was still CEO of NeXT Computer and Pixar”

The interview covers Jobs’ entry into the business world, his take on product development and evolution, and a unique perspective on the PC market from the 90s and other similar topics. All things considered, it’s probably not as controversial as critics may say.

One thing that’s safe to say is that this lost interview is raising considerably less eyebrows than Walter Isaacson’s book on Jobs from 2011, which followed the Silicon Valley idol’s life and included, among other things, a detailed description of his relationship with Bill Gates. The two viewed each other as fervent competitors, but in spite of the fact a lot of grudges were held over ostensibly lost ideas and two very different visions, rivalry wasn’t always at the center of their decisions or relationship.
