Relay Improves Drug Development with TIBCO Tech

Relay dubs itself as a life sciences big data company. It applies insight from unstructured and structured data sets to the pharmaceutical process, and offers value in the laboratory rather than directly from the business angle.

Relay’s product is called Business Development Live, a real-time visualization solution that is now powered by TIBCO’s in-memory analytics software.

BD Live collects information from over 27 million data points according to its maker, which are updated on a daily basis and facilitate a lot more agility in a business where regulations and copyright law have a huge presence in the priorities list. The platform pulls all that data and visualizes it, only now it can put more meaning behind the information that is displayed to the scientist and their boss.

“BD Live! had to be accessible and to facilitate self-discovery as well as allow users to evaluate ideas without re-running reports and risk using stale information,” said  Brigham Hyde, Relay’s co-founder and managing director. “We chose TIBCO Spotfire as the front-end for BD Live! over other data visualization players evaluated, because, as a platinum certified Attivio partner, it can connect directly to AIE so it can perform free text queries to search documents directly, and it connects to R for statistical modeling.”

BD Live is based on the Relay Innovation Engine, which was deeply integrated with Attivio’s Active Intelligence Engine even before the TIBCO partnership. And Hyde, who holds a PhD in pharmacology, recently stopped by theCube together with Attivio CTO Sid Probstein earlier this week to discuss his company’s agenda and other topics with Wikibon.

One of the main things that Hyde tackled was this notion of creating value in the development process of drugs. He said that his firm’s offering can make it easier for scientists to reference not only regulatory material but also medical data, while also allowing them to collaborate more efficiently and boost the R&D process overall.
