Romney And Iran Find Common Ground: They Can’t Stop Internet Porn

Mitt Romney probably doesn’t see himself as the kind of man who’s willing to make too many concessions to Iran any more than the rest of us do, but could it be that the two ‘entities’ have more in common than they like to admit?

For one thing, Romney and the Iranian mullahs both share a great amount of fervor when it comes to their religion, and then there’s the violent tendencies – both seem to itching for a fight, with Romney promising to do ‘whatever it takes’ to stop the mad mullahs getting their hands on nuclear weapons, while the mullahs themselves have made all sorts of threats about ‘crushing infidels’ should we dare to invade.

And although they’d both rather not admit it, Romney and Iran’s religious leaders also have something else in common – their conservatism.

Which is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to hear that both parties have made clear their intentions to crack down on one of their biggest pet hates; the seedy world of internet porn.

Romney made headlines last week when his foreign and legal policy director, Alex Wong, revealed to Justice Department porn prosecutors Patrick Truman and Bob Flores that the presidential candidate would do everything he could to clamp down on naughty websites by “vigorously enforcing federal adult obscenity laws.”

The Republican nominee’s opposition internet porn is nothing new of course. Back in 2007, when speaking at a summit during the previous election campaign, Romney boldly announced:

“If I am President, I will work to make sure that every computer sold into the home has an easy to engage pornography filter so that every parent can protect their child from unwanted filth.”

Interestingly, news of Romney’s anti-porn drive comes at the same time as a similar pledge by Iran’s leaders. Only yesterday, Iranian news agency ISNA reported that the country’s police are planning to work with Facebook (of all people) in an effort to rid the country of sordid internet sites.

What’s amusing is that neither Romney nor Iran has a cat’s chance in hell of seeing their plans through. Given Iran’s highly publicized blocking of Facebook back in 2009 after protestors used the social network to organize demonstrations, it’s unlikely that Mark Zuckerburg will be too interested in lending the crazy mullahs a hand, no matter what Gen. Kamal Hadianfar, Iran’s cyber-security police chief, might claim.

Romney too, will have a very hard time in clearing up the ‘filth’ from our computer screens, according to Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt. In a recent interview with the Daily Caller, who first leaked Romney’s anti-porn pledge, Flynt insisted that Romney wouldn’t even follow through with his plans, because his advisors would immediately doubt point out he had zero chance of winning.

Currently, authorities can prosecute pornographers for obscenity, but only if a jury decides that the material violates subjective “community standards” which make it unlawful. Simply put, Romney doesn’t have the legal power to make his wishes come true.

So despite what he says, it seems that Romney is totally powerless to act against the intruding ‘filth’ on our computer screens, just like his ‘buddies’ in Iran.

Maybe they can get together and just nuke all the pornography producers instead? Given all that they have in common, they’d probably enjoy that.

:)
