DDN Unveils Management Software for Analytics Environments

DataDirect Networks is offering a new consolidated management platform for customers of its SFA, 10K and 12K series systems. DirectMon can run in GridScaler and IBM GBFS environments, and is a part of a broader long term “analytics infrastructure direction” that will eventually cover a bigger portion of DDN’s storage portfolio according to a release.

“DDN’s DirectMon takes the complexity out of managing even the world’s largest Big Data environments, and enables our customers to deploy simple infrastructure capable of scaling up for deep storage capacity and scaling out for added storage capacity and performance,” said Jean Luc Chatelain, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Technology at DDN. “DirectMon increases our customers’ agility as they continue to resolve critical growth and challenges in the Big Data era.”

Transparency and a sufficient roster of administration capabilities are a necessity to achieve the sort of agility that Chatelain praised, and that’s what DDN is offering with DirectMon. Seamless scalability is also a huge factor in high-performance analytics environments that have to crunch through consistently rising quantities of data, and the emphasis here is also an important part of the pitch.

Scalability is a priority in the public cloud as well, and one vendor decided that breaking away from the traditional billing models could help it attract more paying customers. AppFog works just like AWS by charging you for the resources you use, but instead of storage and compute the company is putting a price tag on RAM. Users start out with 2GB and can upgrade their accounts for a monthly fee, with the gigabyte rate steadily dropping as you use up more.

One other aspect that stands out is that free users have access to a lot more stuff than what you would normally expect, and they’re only limited by the RAM that their application or site uses up.
