MapR Partners with Nimbula to Bring Hadoop to the Private Cloud

MapR is joining forces with software startup Nimbula to get its Hadoop distribution running in the private cloud, and there are a few solid very reasons why it decided to go with this particular firm.

Nimbula was founded by Chris Pinkham and Willem Van Biljon, the two technologists who led the development team that created Amazon EC2, and has been listed by Fortune as “one of three cloud properties ready to burst.”

The startup dubs itself as a cloud OS company, and its flagship offering is Nimbula Director, a platform that helps with the deployment and administration of IaaS in enterprise environments. It achieves this by taking an organization’s physical boxes and creating a single pool of resources that is provisioned via a single interface – a very ideal setup for managing both regular and big data workloads.

The main advantages being touted by the two firms include multi-tenancy, the ability to deploy a Hadoop cluster in under two minutes, and automated provisioning of failed instances. The solution also takes the single-point-of-failure out of the equation with no-NameNode architecture, according to Nimbula, and all these features are coupled with MapR’s own separate pitch.

“Nimbula is excited to be working with MapR to deliver the industry’s first turnkey Hadoop solution for private cloud,” said Jay Judkowitz, director of product marketing at Nimbula. “With this solution, customers can have the best of two worlds. They can have big data processing from Hadoop with private cloud’s ability to deliver low cost shared infrastructure that manages elastic demand between multiple tenants.”

The private cloud is only one area that MapR is gunning for – a couple months ago the firm expanded to the public cloud as well via a partnership with AWS.
