VMware Horizon Offers Integrated Mobile Workforce Platform

VMware logoAt VMworld 2012, VMware announced a number of new products and services. Among them is the new VMware Horizon Suite, which allows customers to connect to their corporate cloud workspace using any device from anywhere they happen to be.

VMware Horizon is designed for users in what VMware calls the post-PC era. These users are in need of solutions that work across multiple devices and allow them to manage their cloud-based solutions from anywhere they happen to be. The Horizon Suite multi-device workspace combines technology from Project AppBlast, Project Octopus, VMware Horizon Mobile, ThinApp, and VMware Horizon Application Manager.

Customers will be able to customize a service catalog for applications and data through a central Web management console. VMware Horizon Suite will spread a user’s universal working environment and attributes across all applications, data, and workspaces, allow the user to access and continue work on local, cloud, and mobile devices.

According to IDC Senior Research Analyst Brett Waldman, mobile devices and applications have dramatically changed the IT landscape. “Modern solutions will need to have an integrated approach that holistically manages users, applications and devices to satisfy radically changing requirements to be well accepted by today’s IT organizations,” he said.

VMware also introduced VMware View and Wanova Mirage, technology that allows companies to centralize desktop deployment and management. Both virtual and physical desktops are now easily accessible from the data center, and VMware View appliances can host anywhere from 25 to 500 virtual desktops. Ultimately, VMware hopes to bring together a unified application experience across Windows, iOS, Android, and and SaaS in general.
