Apple Reports 2M iPhone 5 Pre-ordered In just 24 Hours

Today’s mobile news roundup features: the iPhone 5’s record breaking pre-order weekend; Samsung saying the Galaxy SIV launch in March 2013 not true; LG to fulfill target goal by year’s end; and Scout by Telenav now available on Android.

Apple breaks records once again

Yesterday, it was reported that the iPhone 5 pre-order phase during the weekend broke records but no numbers were yet published.  Apple later revealed that pre-orders of the iPhone 5 topped 2 million units in the initial 24 hours, more than double the first wave of sales of last year’s 4S version.  And with the iPhone 5’s official retail debut on Friday, sales are expected to go even higher and faster.

Samsung denies Galaxy SIV rumors

The Samsung Galaxy SIII was unveiled last May so news surfacing that Samsung is to launch the Galaxy SIV by March 2013 drew attention.  As a consumer, learning that a new version would be on sale in just a few months after buying the latest version is concerning.  People always want the latest gadgets the brands have to offer, and achieving that isn’t cheap.  So Samsung addressed the rumor in a tweet stating that it wasn’t true and they were baffled as to who would spread those rumors.  They were concerned that the rumor would affect their sales, as it may dishearten possible buyers.

LG to fulfill target goal by year’s end

Apple and Samsung are dominating the mobile market and this does not look good for other players like LG, who reportedly sold only 10.7 million smartphones in the first half of the year, well behind their target of 30-35 million units sold for the whole year.  They still have a few months to reach their target, and they are positive they can reach it, especially with new devices coming in the second half of the year like their 4.7-inch Optimus phone, which they believe can compete with the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy SIII.

Scout by Telenav hits Android devices

Scout by Telenav announced that it is now available for Android devices.  It was launched back in January for iOS devices and it received a lot of good reviews, growing demand for an Android version.  Scout is an app that provides mapping, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, voice recognition and limited local search for a 30-day trial but the premium version costs $24.99 per year or $4.99 per month, with additional features such as traffic info, automatic rerouting, speed trap and traffic camera locations, lane assist and speed limit alerts.  The paid version is the only way to get a new feature called Car Connect that enables it to work with Ford’s Sync AppLink.
