Breaking Analysis: Yahoo! Can Be Saved!
New Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer has big plans for her new job, recently unveiling plans for the company’s future. The plans sounded good but broad, and the fact that she did not give any details as to how those plans will be put into play is suspect of an ailing company.
AllThingsD stated that Mayer did not show “highly specific plans for overhauling search and email, as well as an in-process and dramatic home page redesign. She also said little about what she is going to do with Yahoo’s recent cash haul from its sale of part of its stake in China’s Alibaba.”
Om Malik, the founder of GigaOM, was even harsher in his comments about Yahoo stating that, “the rot inside Yahoo is so deep, so extensive and so cultural that it would take a divine intervention for the company to overcome its woes. Major and painful cuts won’t be enough and neither will be the acquisitions.”
But not everyone is negative about the future of Yahoo. SiliconANGLE founder and CEO John Furrier stated in an interview at SiliconANGLE’s NewsDesk that, though he respects for Om Malik, he completely disagrees with him. In Furrier’s opinion, Yahoo is savable (full video below).
“Personally, I think it’s all BS at this point. Yahoo is absolutely savable. Om Malik is wrong on this one. although his perspective might be accurate whatever the source is, I absolutely think that Yahoo is not rotten to the core, I think that they are savable.”
Furrier goes on stating that Yahoo has 500 million uniques users everyday, as well as assets, which they can pivot off of. But Furrier stated that Yahoo does have a problem: and to solve it they have no guts.
Furrier’s advice for Yahoo is to make a decision and stick by it since they already have the people who can make things happen. He also noted that although executive management had been lacking in the past, with the hiring of Mayer, she can set the standards to be able to push through with their plans.
“Go in. Pick a market. Post a position. Drive down that path and leverage those 500 million people everyday. And to me, that’s an amazing turnaround opportunity,” Furrier added. See the clip in its entirety below.
