This Week in Big Data: Precog Funding, MongoDB NoSQL Lectures, and More

This week features the usual handful of updates from analytics vendors, including Precog – an up-and-coming big data startup. Its service entered open beta this Monday.

Precog, which has $2 million in the bank thanks to a recent funding round, offers a cloud-based framework that enables all sorts of apps to leverage their structured and semi-structured data. The service is compatible with practically everything from mobile applications to more complicated backend systems, and provides a very convenient means of embedding analytical capabilities in software products.

10gen also had a big update this week. The MongoDB solutions provider unveiled plans to integrate online courses into its education program.  Starting October users around the world will be able to participate lectures about NoSQL technologies for free in the MOOC format, made possible thanks to a partnership with edX. The latter is providing the student engagement platform that 10gen will use to power these massively open online courses.

Over in the enterprise BI space, SAP decided it’s going to refresh its portfolio with the addition of big data features to a number of key products in its BusinessObjects line-up. Four BusinessObjects solutions are now available in analytics edition that ship with the Sybase IQ database and SAP Data Integrator.

Photojournalist Rick Smolan has labored on something a lot more unusual, and today his project finally launched. The Human Face of Big Data is a mobile experiment that doesn’t analyze data, but instead focuses on how it influences the end user. Users interested in participating can download a mobile app which will ask them a series of questions each day, and prompt them to take part in online activates via the application. Smolan and his crew will use this input to visualize the way people from around the world interact with their information.
