Samsung to Sue Apple over iPhone 5, Galaxy Tab 10.1 Ban Lifted
Today’s mobile news roundup: Samsung sues Apple for iPhone 5; HTC announces a faster One X; and AT&T prepares to launch new prepaid plan in October.
Samsung sues Apple for iPhone 5
In a never ending battle for supremacy, Samsung filed a motion against Apple’s new iPhone 5 for allegedly infringing eight of their patents. Before the iPhone 5 was launched, Samsung already threatened that they might sue Apple if the iPhone 5 has LTE capabilities in particular, a technology for which the South Korean company owns numerous patents.
“We have always preferred to compete in the marketplace with our innovative products, rather than in courtrooms. However, Apple continues to take aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition,” Samsung said in statement, adding that they have little choice but to “take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights.”
In other Samsung news, the ban on their Galaxy Tab 10.1 imposed last June has finally been lifted. After the $1 billion verdict was handed down in Apple’s favor, Samsung asked Judge Lucy Koh to dissolve the ban imposed on the device since it was not found infringing of Apple’s iPad. But the ban was not overturned, as Judge Koh no longer had jurisdiction over the matter. The power to lift the ban was returned to Judge Koh last Friday with a US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals ruling allowing her to decide on the issue. She was quick to overturn the ban.
HTC unveils new, faster version of One X

The HTC One X+ looks a lot like the original, but the internal components were upgraded to deliver faster and better performance. It features a 1.7 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 64GB of internal storage, 2100 mAh battery, 4.7 inch Super LCD 2 display with Gorilla Glass 2, Android 4.1 with HTC Sense 4+, 1GB RAM, 8 megapixel camera with ImageSense processor and F2.0 aperature, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX technology, NFC with support for Tap and Go (think Nokia and NFC speakers), 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, DLNA, and HDMI out with MHL adapter and dimensions of 134.36 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm and 135 grams.

AT&T to launch new prepaid plan in October
Starting October 7, consumers on a budget can enjoy a new prepaid option under AT&T’s GoPhone plans. The new GoPhone plan will include unlimited talk and text and 1GB of data, and cost just $65 a month. The current available plan starts at $50 a month for unlimited text and talk, but to add data plans you need to add $5, $15, or $25 for 50MB, 200MB and 1GB data plans respectively.
“As more of our prepaid customers choose smartphones, we wanted to offer them a rate plan that meets their needs while still being an excellent value,” said Judy Cavalieri, vice president – Voice and Prepaid Products, AT&T. “We’re excited to offer this new option to our growing base of smartphone customers to give them a better smartphone experience while keeping their budget in check.”
Aside from the $65 GoPhone plan, AT&T will also be unveiling the affordable Fusion 2 Android smartphone for only $99 on October 7.
