Oracle’s 4 Cutting-Edge Solutions for Backup & Recovery

Live from Oracle World 2012, SiliconAngle founder John Furrier and Wikibon Co-founder Dave Vellante did a special spotlight segment on Oracle Backup and Recovery. Oracle has been focusing on these areas heavily and in his keynote, CEO Larry Ellison described this fraction of the market as the “hottest area right now.”

The backup and recovery industry grows more extensive by the year, thanks to the manifold of dimensions it takes on: virtualization, flash, spinning disk, disaster and recovery, to name a few. According to a survey conducted by Unit Panel Oracle Users’ Group, 30 percent of Oracle shops are managing more than a hundred terabytes of data. This shows that there is an increasing awareness towards the importance of virtualization, and this means larger demand for backup services. Doing backup on your own is typically a grim task if you don’t have in-house resources, adding to the need for a services-oriented market.

In the same survey, backup and recovery, and data protection were cited among the top three drivers of data growth.  In order to address this problem, companies simply add more disks. The problem with this is that they are caught in the race to get rid of data in order to create more storage space. Even with this setback, 45 percent of the customers reported that more than half of their backup data still resides on tape. Tape is now only for archive purposes, not a primary medium for backup.

In this video, our hosts outline the four cutting-edge Oracle backup solutions that you can choose from: Import/Export, Cold or Offline Backup, Hot or Online Backup, and RMAN. The pros and cons are cited so you can weigh your options carefully. Check out the video below for more details!
