OpenStack distributor PistonCloud recently published an infographic that sums up how much OpenStack grown since its launch in 2010. The initiative is big, no doubt, and the company is offering some specific numbers to back up that claim.
OpenStack has been downloaded at least 300,000 times since it became available to developers. It also evolved – the source code adds up to 1,250,000 lines, thanks to contributions made by 49 different companies and 320 individuals. There are more than 100 major deployments of the cloud OS software, powering the environments of companies like AT&T and DreamHost.
Lastly, PistonCloud reports that over 1200 community members are attending this week’s OpenStack Summit in San Diego. The big players are not missing out either: Cisco, Dell and several other vendors – both big and small – have set up booths at the conference to show off their new OpenStack solutions.
Cisco just unveiled a free distribution of the cloud framework – the selling point is not the code itself, but rather the services the company plans to bundle with it. Perhaps most notable is that Cisco is rolling out support for Quantum, the virtual networking component introduced with the most recent Folsom community distro.
Dell also had something up its sleeve, ready for the event. Together with Morphlabs it helped cloud host Media Temple develop Helix, a high-performance private cloud service based on OpenStack. It runs on PowerEdge C6220 servers and SSDs and leverages Dell’s open Crowbar tool for configuration and management.
Rackspace and NetApp in turn both announced major new contributions to the project. The web host rolled out new open-source SDKs for Java and PHP developers who want to write apps for OpenStack, while NetApp released ONTAP 8 clustering drivers for Folsom.
