NYC Data Week 2012: Full Event Calendar (Parties, Too!)

New York City Data Week officially kicks off today and will run until the 26th of October.  This week marks the annual gathering to talk about what’s happening in the Data world, and it it’s not just for geeks.  Several companies are holding their own events to commemorate the week, and if you’re at NYC in the next few days and interested in finding out what’s new with Big Data, here’s the schedule for Data Week:

Monday – October 22

IBM Big Data Developer Day – The event will be held at the IBM Client Center, 590 Madison Avenue, New York, NY from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  The event will be hosted by the IBM Big Data Development team, which will feature interactive discussions and live demonstrations of big data for social media and log analytics, as well as hands on with Hadoop scripting and text analytics with guidance from development experts.  Limited seating only.

Big Data Camp – The venue for the event will be at the Hilton New York, Murray Hill Suite, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 5:30PM to 10:00PM.  The event will be hosted by Dave Nielson and will feature an unconference for users of Hadoop and related Big Data technologies, with community-proposed topics, Lightning Talks, and Unconference sessions.

Using Linked Open Data Rocket Boosters to slay your Big Data Wrangling Dragons! – Will be held at the Hilton NY, Murray Hill Suite, 1335 Ave of the Americas during Big Data Camp Lightening Talks from 6:30PM to 6:35PM.  This will feature techniques on how to use Linked Data (Web 3.0) to minimize your Data Wrangling troubles and get current, high-quality open data to power your Open Data innovations.

Ignite NYC – Will be held at the Sheraton New York, Metropolitan Ballroom, 811 7th Avenue 53rd Street, New York from 6:30PM to 8:45PM.  The event was organized by Director of Ignite NYC Tikva Morowato and will feature 5-minute speed presentations with a data focus, in the fields of technology, business and the arts. Registration is for $10.

Mini Maker Faire – Happening at the Sheraton New York, Metropolitan West Ballroom, 811 7th Avenue 53rd Street, New York, from 8:00PM to 10:00PM.  Organized by the O’Reilly Make team and will showcase innovative data-related hardware, apps, and projects selected from research, academia, and yet-to-be-discovered entrepreneurs.

Tuesday – October 23

DataKind DataSprint – The event will be at the Sheraton New York, Empire Ballroom, 811 7th Avenue 53rd Street, New York from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.  The event is an all-day hackathon focused on a critical New York City data project.

Data Visualization Showcase – Happening at the Hilton New York, Level 2, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.  The event will highlight successful visualizations that provide new insight and relevance to big data across a broad range of topics.

Strata Conference + Hadoop World – The conference will be held at the Hilton New York, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York from 9:00AM to 5:30PM.  The event will explore the changes brought to technology and business by big data, data science, and pervasive computing.  Registration fee ranges from $1095 to $1545.

Data Sensing Lab – Hilton New York, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.  The project will use basic off-the-shelf sensors and mesh networking at the Strata+Hadoop World conference to observe and report to be able to generate interesting sociological data from the distributed sensor network.

Sqoop meetup – At PulsePoint, 345 Hudson Street, 5th Floor, New York, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.  Organized by Kathleen Ting to facilitate un-conference style sessions and networking on Sqoop.

NYC Data Business Meetup – At Bloomberg Headquarters, 731 Lexington Avenue (between 58th and 59th Streets), from 6:00PM to 9:00PM.  The event requires pre-registration as walk-ins won’t be entertained.  It will discuss trends, opportunities and challenges for big data and data-driven startups with Venture Capitalists such as Mike Abbott of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Roger Ehrenberg of IA Ventures, Ping Lee of Accel Partners, and Matt Ocko of Data Collective will be attending the event.

StartOut Demo Night – At the Tribeca Grand Hotel; 2 Avenue of the Americas; New York, from 6:00PM to 9:30PM.  The event will facilitate startups so they can pitch their ideas and demo to the community and potential investors.

Displaying Data on Mobile Devices – Happening at the Hilton New York, Murray Hill Suite, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.  The event will revolve around journalism, reporting and display of data on mobile devices.

Startup Showcase – Sheraton New York, Metropolitan Ballroom, 811 7th Avenue 53rd Street, New York, from 6:30PM to 8:00PM.  The event will showcase 12 to 15 data-focused startups to demonstrate their innovations.

Google Developer’s Group – Big Query, OAuth 2.0, Big Data with Go – Google NYC, 111 8th Avenue, New York (use entrance closest to 15th St., proceed to 10th Floor) from 6:30 PM to 8:30PM.

Hadoop Meetup – Happening at the FourSquare freight entrance, 110 Crosby St (between Houston and Prince), 10th floor, New York, from 7:00PM to 10:00PM.  An un-conference style meet-up that will be preceded by short talks regarding Hadoop.

MongoDB Meetup – Hilton New York, Sutton South Room, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 7:00PM to 9:00PM.

Apache Hive Meetup – Hilton New York, Concourse B, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, at 7:00PM.  The event will feature a series of short 15 minute talks on Apache Hive followed by un-conference style sessions and networking.

DataGotham at Strata – At the Hilton New York, Beekman Parlor + Sutton North Room, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 7:30PM to 9:00PM.  The event will give you a taste of New York’s data community and will feature the strongest speakers on topics like influence in social networks, statistics in sports and fashion, and the beauty of normalization.

Platfora Launch Party – Happening at the AVA Lounge, Dream Hotel, 210 West 55th Street, New York, from 8:00PM to 10:00PM.

Wednesday – October 24

The Future of Security – Happening at the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center; The New School; 55 West 13th Street, 2nd Floor, from 9:00AM to 3:30PM.  The event will feature a daylong series of discussions to highlight the emerging, disruptive forces changing the landscape of the global community.

Data Innovation in Finance Panel – At the Hilton New York, Murray Hill Suite, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.  The panel will discuss the status of data innovation in finance.

Strata + Hadoop World NYC Pig Meetup – At the Hilton New York, Beekman Parlor + Sutton North Room, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.  An inaugural meetup featuring Apache Pig VP Daniel Dai of Hortonworks as the speaker who will discuss exciting new features in Pig 0.11, including the CUBE operator, a new RANK operator, the addition of a DateTime type, and speed improvements via SchemaTuple.

Python Meetup – At the Hilton New York, Sutton Center + South Room, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, at 7:00PM.  The event will feature Kurt Brown of Netflix who will be discussing Python use in Data Science & Engineering at Netflix.

Apache Accumulo – Strata+ Hadoop World Meetup – At the Hilton New York, Regent Parlor, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 7:00PM to 9:00PM.  A series of short talks, including: Welcome and Introductions by Oren Falkowitz (sqrrl) and Billie Rinaldi (Hortonworks); Introduction to Apache Accumulo and Getting Started with Amazon and Eucalyptus by John Vines (sqrrl); Large Scale Web Analytics with Accumulo (Nutch / Gora, Pig, and Storm) by Jason Trost (End Game Systems); Geospatial Indexing with Accumulo by Jim Klucar; and Compaction and Splitting (Accumulo & HBase) by Billie Rinaldi (Hortonworks).

Thursday – October 25

Data Innovation Across the City Panel – At the Sheraton New York, Metropolitan Ballroom, 811 7th Avenue 53rd Street, New York, from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.  The panel will bring together a diverse group of experts to provide a cross section of the exciting data work being done in NYC, and discuss the history and future of data innovation in their respective areas.

Flume Meetup – At the PulsePoint, 345 Hudson Street, 5th Floor, New York, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.  Un-conference style sessions and networking on Flume.

HBase Meetup – At the AppNexus, 28 West 23rd St, 4th Floor, New York, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM.  Talks will include  “A Hadoop and HBase Use Case: Scaling the AppNexus Data Pipeline” by AppNexus’s Director of Engineering; “Fast Map Reduce over HBase” by Keith Wyss and Casey Stella from Explory; and “Continuuity New HBase Contributions” by Jonathan Gray from Continuuity; followed by networking.

The Open Internet and the 2012 Election – At the NYU Stern School of Business; 44 West 4th Street; New York, NY, from 6:00PM to 7:30PM.  A conversation about how the dialogue around a free and open Internet has evolved since SOPA/PIPA and the role that it is playing in the 2012 election.  Registration fee is $10.

Drinks and Data – special pre-PyData edition – At the Dewey’s Flat Iron, 210 5th Ave, New York, from 6:30PM to 9:30PM.

Zookeeper Meetup – At the Hilton New York, Concourse C, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.  An event to present Zookeeper-related works, discuss new features and talk about the roadmap for 3.4.X and 3.5, as well as meet ZooKeeper folks from all over.

Cloudera Manager Meetup – At the Hilton New York, Harlem Suite, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York, starting at 7:00PM.  The event will allows you to meet with engineers and fellow Cloudera Manager users.  The meeting will also feature discussions regarding future features of Cloudera Manager.

Friday – October 26

PyData NYC and Hackathon – Will be held at the Lighthouse International; 111 East 59th Street, Manhattan, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.  The PyData conference and workshop is a 3-day event for scientists, engineers, and data analysts in the Python community that will focus on techniques and tools for management, analytics, and visualization of data of different types and sizes with particular emphasis on big data.  Registration fee is at $399.
