Skype For Windows 8 Gets Slick & Stylish Makeover

Skype has been given a makeover just in time for the launch of Windows 8, with a modern, stylish new interface and a host of improvements that Microsoft says will allow it to take full advantage of the operating system’s new features.

The new look app is compatible with both Windows 8 and Windows RT devices, meaning it will run on tablets such as Microsoft’s Surface, and allows users to handle calls whilst running as many other apps and programs as they desire. Skype will also be equipped with a new video messaging capability that allows people to leave short video messages to users who are online but away.

Skype’s tile-based interface has been designed for easy interaction with both touchscreen and the traditional keyboard-and-mouse setup, and the app will always be running in the background, so that the moment its opened up users will be able to see all the recent messages and missed calls displayed.

Through the dial pad, Skype can be used to call both cell phones and landlines directly, while from here users can quickly and easily view all the recent calls they’ve made. In addition, the new-look Skype employs Windows Messenger architecture for transferring and storing media files like images and videos on Windows Azure.

An additional great feature exclusive to Windows 8 is the People app, which is a redesigned version of what were once address books and contact lists on earlier versions of Windows. Essentially, the People app is a kind of cloud-based address book that integrates with Skype to display all of a user’s contacts the moment they log on using their Microsoft account.

One of the handiest functions is that People app automatically adds the Skype details of anyone that users have previously been in touch with. In addition, the People app also features integration with Facebook, twitter and others, allowing users to engage with their social media base via the app.

Users can choose to ‘pin’ their most important contacts onto the desktop, while initiating a conversation – be it a video call, audio call or chat – can be accomplished with a single tap on the touchscreen or click of the mouse.

Skype for Windows 8 will be launched on October 26, the same day as the launch of the operating system itself. In their blog post, Skype says that you’ll be able to find the new app “on your new device”, or simply download it from the Windows store, meaning that some devices may well come pre-installed with the software.
