Data Week: A New SXSW for the Sleek Geek?

When I first ventured into the world of online publishing, social media was the buzz term of the day.  SXSW was the mecca of all things web 2.0, and you could feel the revolution under foot, freeing individual voices and empowering a consumer-driven era.  Yet nothing’s grabbed my heart like data science, the underlying methods that add context and commerce to the social media movement.  In fact, data science is bigger than social media, finding a foothold in academia and advertising, changing the way we manage global supply chains, all in an effort to optimize our quest for knowledge.

Data Week, then, is a new sort of SXSW for me, bringing together great minds and curious members of a broad industry set.  Taking place in New York City this week, Data Week is a data geek’s haven.  At SiliconAngle the fun began at IBM’s Information On Demand conference, where Big Blue’s ageless theme, “Think,” took on a whole new meaning for today’s big data trends.

But perhaps the peak of Data Week is Hadoop World, a conference in its third year, put on by Cloudera.  It’s been great fun to watch Hadoop World grow with each passing year, attracting the prominent O’Reilly Media as a co-producer.  SiliconAngle is broadcasting live from IBM IOD and Strata + Hadoop World this year, speaking with industry visionaries like filmaker Jason Silva, Cloudera CEO Mike Olson and many others.  Indeed, it’s a grand week for Hadoop, a platform with a burgeoning ecosystem and plenty of supporters, many of which are in attendance at Strata + Hadoop World this year.

An exciting week, to be sure, Hadoop isn’t alone in the limelight.  Apple’s made quite a fuss over the freshly unveiled iPad mini, rounding out their iDevice line to compete with a growing number of pint-sized tablets from Amazon, Google and Samsung.  Not surprisingly Apple’s new iPad mini is priced considerably higher than many of its rivals, giving consumers quite a lot to think about this holiday shopping season.

Certainly, consumers are finding themselves empowered in the mobile space as well, and it’s left quite a mark on the enterprise space.  People are bringing their tablets to work, taking their work home on their tablets, and doing more in the cloud.  Two of this week’s features on our ServicesAngle channel explore mobility’s influence on Unified Communications, and whether or not mobile as a backend service is more than hype.
