From Holidays to Hurricanes, Instagram Breaks More Records

In today’s mobile news roundup: Apple seeks to add more devices in its case against Samsung; Nokia unveils two new feature phones; Nexus 4 users report device problems; and Thanksgiving breaks all Instagram records.

Thanksgiving breaks all Instagram records

It seems the world was eager to share their turkey photos on Instagram this year.  The photo-sharing/editing site logged over 10 million Thanksgiving photos last Thursday.

“Over 10 million photos that mentioned Thanksgiving-themed words in their captions were shared yesterday,” Instagram stated on their blog.

“For several hours throughout the day, more than 200 photos about Thanksgiving were posted every second. Overall, the day broke all Instagram records as we saw the number of shared photos more than double from the day before, making it our busiest day so far.”

This surpassed the recent Presidential Election and the surge of Instagram photos related to Hurricane Sandy.

Apple seeks to add more devices in case against Samsung

Last week, Samsung sought to add the iPad mini, iPod Touch 5 and iPad 4 to their patent complaint against Apple after U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal agreed to let Samsung and Apple add new devices to their patent.

Apple is not to be outdone, as they’ve filed to add six more devices to their case against Samsung.  The said devices are: the Galaxy Note II, the Galaxy S III running the new Android “Jelly Bean” mobile OS, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the Samsung Rugby Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini.

“Apple has acted quickly and diligently to determine that these newly-released products do infringe many of the same claims already asserted by Apple,” the company said in the filing.

Nokia unveils two new feature phones

Nokia unveiled two new features phones that are socially focused, and tote a new sharing feature calle Nokia Slam.  The Nokia Asha 205 is a feature phone which sports a QWERTY keypad, smaller screen, QVGA camera at the back and encased in colorful but light plastic material.  The Asha 205 has a dedicated Facebook button to make it easier for users to update their FB status, plus it has native Facebook and Twitter apps so being socially active is not a hassle and no longer just for smartphone users.  It is available in single and dual SIM versions.  It boasts of great battery life, up to 37 days with single SIM and up to 25 days with dual SIM.

As for the Nokia 206, it is not part of the Asha line but is also a feature phone that sports an alphanumeric keypad, a 1.3MP camera optimized for sharing on Facebook, native social apps, available in dual and single SIM and has an impressive standby time of up to 47 days with single SIM and up to 28 days with dual SIM.

The great thing about the feature phones is the new Nokia Slam feature allows users to share via Bluetooth without the need to pair the devices.  Also, the feature is compatible with Android devices but unfortunately not with Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phone 8 line.

Nexus 4 users report device problems

About 130+ Nexus 4 users reported that they hear a buzzing and clicking sound on their device, whether the screen is on, on standby and even in flight mode.  Issue 39936: Nexus 4 constant buzzing in earpiece also garnered about 140+ users who starred the topic, indicating there are more people experiencing the bug.  Though the number of people reporting the problem is quite minute, experiencing such a bug for a $300+ phone may be irritating for some.

Though Google and LG have yet to address the issue, some of the users are already on the process of having their device replaced.  Some users pegged the issue as something to do with shielding, other say it’s got to do with the battery.  But they’re all hopeful that Google and LG’s silence means they are aware of the problem and are already working on a solution.
