Is 40M Licenses for Windows 8 a Triumph?

Consumers and organizations purchased over 40 million Windows 8 licenses since the operating system launched in stores on October 26, according to Tami Reller. The Microsoft executive, who serves as the company’s chief marketing officer and CFO, revealed this milestone during her keynote at this week’s Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far.”

Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc shared a few other statistics about his firm’s new OS in a follow-up blog entry.  He writes that the Windows Store had a bigger applications catalog on October 26 than any other app store on launch, and that the list doubled in size since then. He also disclosed that several apps raked an excess of $25,000 in revenue.

The Windows Store’s growth can be credited to a couple of things in particular, with the first and most obvious being that Microsoft practically monopolizes the PC market with its OS brand. The second reason is that the company’s takes only 20 percent of every transaction, 10 percent less than the App Store and Google Play.

These two factors, namely the competitive pricing, drove both small studios and household names to optimize their apps for Windows 8. CBS, ABC News, ABC Family, Engadget, Flixste and OWN are some of the big names brands that maintain a presence on the Store, alongside SAP/

A couple weeks ago the BI giant launched six business applications for Windows 8, including a new dashboarding tool labeled as SAP WorkDeck. The other five apps have all been around for a while longer: they are Manager Insight, Interview Assistant, Learning Assistant, Customer Financial Fact Sheet and GRC Policy Survey.
