For far too long, organizations have confined structured data to relational databases and unstructured data to simplistic keyword-matching technologies. Exploiting information across its many forms is the next big wave to drive competitive advantage.
Following the acquisition of Vertica and Autonomy, HP has brought these two into a single solution called Next Generation Information Optimization solution. With this platform, user can search and analyze structured and unstructured data.
The Vertica Analytics platform is software dedicated to storage and analysis of very large amounts of structured data, or data that has been stored in a relational database. The Autonomy IDOL (Intelligent Data Operating Layer) solution indexes unstructured data within an enterprise and provide users a search interface.
HP’s updated Autonomy IDOL 10 solution is optimized for ProLiant server platforms, which includes a set of links which can be more easily integrated with Vertica. IDOL, in its version 10 will be available from next month, and will provide users with the opportunity to work with structured data stored in Vertica database.
If the force of Autonomy depends on its ability to process text, audio and video data, Vertica provides extra databases resources column and analytical capabilities. It has additional features including a scale out-optimized MPP grid architecture, aggressive data compression and columnar storage capabilities, and a built-in high availability unique cluster design.
The latest release of Vertica, Vertica 6, significantly expands the platform’s ability to analyze data from outside sources for analysis, including Hadoop and HP’s own Autonomy IDOL platform. Based on FlexStore architecture, the platform is designed to provide access to any data, stored anywhere, using any interface.
Single platform for structured and unstructured data
The unified search interface of Vertica Analytics platform could be particularly useful for displaying in a single stream based on a synthesis of structured and unstructured data.
For companies, this information is generally handled by separate systems. For example, information from social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, etc., which is typically captured as unstructured data, could be explored using Vertica graphical and analytical features. The video and audio streams, both of which can be ingested by IDOL, could be coupled with data related to historical events stored in Vertica to provide real time tracking.
Another example: a bank could follow a telephone conversation with a client that requests a line of credit and associate it with some keywords analyzed by Autonomy, triggering an alert in Vertica. During the conversation, if the caller leaves out something that could indicate a high risk credit, company could immediately be altered by the Vertica analysis functions.
Promising partnerships enhance data efficiency
Organizations struggle with turning massive amounts of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data into business insights, doing so cost effectively and in near real time. For this reason, HP is partnering across the industry to develop big data services with Vertica’s real-time analytics platform.
The company recently partnered with Capgemini to access the customer’s existing analytics for faster queries, reduced costs and real-time analytics. The new HP ProLiant SL4500 server series is built for big data environments to provide maximum performance, productivity and cost-effectiveness.
By partnering with HP Vertica, Capgemini’s customers can combine all of their available data sources and analyze that data over larger time periods, all with very fast response times, allowing them to get a clear picture of what’s happening in their business right now.
HP has another recent partnership with NORC at the University of Chicago, an independent organization with over 70 years’ experience in the field of collection, analysis and dissemination of data. NORC collaborates with government agencies in the United States and educational organizations and non-profit and private companies to provide data and analyzing them in order to help them make better decisions in the world of health, education, economics, justice, energy, environment and security.
With the advantages of speed, simplicity and low investment that HP Vertica offers, NORC is able to focus more on quality research and subsequent analysis, instead of worrying about infrastructure and hardware.
