HP Unveils New Big Data Offerings from Vertica, Autonomy

Hewlett-Packard announced a slew of new technology solutions and services at the HP Discover conference held this week in Frankfurt, Germany. The new offerings include sophisticated software, eDiscovery products and training programs aimed at large organizations that are adopting big data analytics.

Among these latest additions to HP’s portfolio is the Autonomy Legal Performance Suite, a cloud-based compliance and information governance toolset designed to help enterprises handle sensitive data.  The company also augmented its Converged Storage portfolio.

In the services department Hewlett-Packard is introducing HP Proactive Care for SAP, which is supposed to provide an “additional level of support for organizations managing complex IT environments.” HP is most likely focusing on the more data-driven parts of the German BI firm’s portfolio, namely the HANA in-memory analytics platform.

The hardware vendor unveiled two other services this morning:  HP Telco Big Data and Analytics, and HP Big Data Workshop.

“Over the next several years, Return on Information will become the single most important measure of success for organizations,” said George Kadifa, executive vice president, Software, HP. “HP will continue to invest in and develop solutions and services that harness the volume, diversity and unpredictability of information to deliver real value to our clients.”

Last year, Hewlett-Packard paid over $11 billion for a UK analytics firm called Autonomy to catch up with its peers’ in the analytics market. But the big data vendor’s questionable accounting practices forced HP to make a $8.8 billion write off that was only revealed during the company’s latest earnings call. The disclosure promptly triggered a chain reaction that have so have far resulted in a lawsuit, a lot of bad coverage, and a PR battle with Autonomy’s former management: Meg Whitman is duking it out with Mike Lynch.

This week is an opportunity to see how well HP can rationalize its acquisitions in the past two years, revamping its portfolio around 3PAR, Vertica, Autonomy and more.  Our own Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins is of the belief that Autonomy, despite its controversial circumstances, is still solid technology.  After this week, HP’s customers will be able to determine how significant of a contribution Autonomy will make to HP’s product lineup as the datacenter becomes more data driven.
