We’re Back, Baby! HP Unveils Single Architecture for Converged Storage

HP LogoToday, HP announced a breakthrough in its Converged Storage offerings that will provide a single architecture for all enterprise deployments. The new systems: HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, HP StoreAll Storage, and HP StoreOnce Backup, are highly flexible and able to withstand virtualized, big data, and cloud environments.

Unlike previous Converaged Storage solutions, HP’s latest will cut costs and allow a single-system architecture to manifest in a variety of states, while also retaining common data services for object, file, and block applications.

HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage will support block and file data services on hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD) with performance numbers around 320,000 input/output operations per second. HP StoreAllStorage is ideal for big data retention and cloud storage and will, HP says, reduce the number of administrators and amount of hardware necessary. It will make use of HP StoreAllExpress Query to provide a metadata database capable of high-speed queries 100,000 times faster than previous technologies. HP StoreOnce 2000 and 4000 Backup will allow for high-performance duplication, more efficient data movement, and will be capable of performing backups approximately 3 times faster and at a 35 percent lower cost than the competition.

Converged storage combines compute and storage with the goal of more efficient storage and handling of workloads. HP is not the only company working to push out converged storage solutions. EMC, IBM, and NetApp all have competing technology in what Wikibon’s Dave Vellante has called the “Storage Wars“.

“HP’s unique set of Converged Storage innovations helps clients simplify infrastructure and reduce costs with a common architecture across storage segments and categories,” said David Scott, HP’s Storage Division senior vice president and general manager.

For HP, this latest innovation in Converged Storage is a step the company hopes will give it an edge over the competition in both price and performance.
