MapR Sets Up Shop in Europe, Can’t Afford To Be Anything But Aggressive with Global Growth

MapR is opening up a new outlet in London, England to serve as its European headquarters. The expansion is designed to give the Hadoop distributor a strong foothold in a region where many of its customers and partners reside.  The latter category includes not only system integrators but also EMC, Cisco and other big name vendors that maintain licensing agreements with the company.

“There has been phenomenal Hadoop demand across Europe for our performance, unprecedented dependability and ease of use advantages,” said John Schroeder, CEO and co-founder, MapR Technologies. “Our European expansion is a response to our strong customer growth and partner momentum.”

MapR didn’t disclose who will be leading its new branch, but some of its representatives did show up at the Data Analytics 2012 convention held in London this Thursday.

The big data firm is competing in a very crowded marketplace, and it can’t afford to be anything but aggressive with its global growth strategy.  One of MapR’s most recent milestones was the launch of M7 in October, the new enterprise version of its Hadoop offering.

The upgraded distributed rolled out with HBase integration that boosts both batch analytics and real-time operations. Shortly after the debut the platform set a 1TB TeraSort benchmark with a 54 second record on Google Compute Engine, a relatively new presence in the IaaS space.

While MapR kept itself busy proving its technology to customers, Cloudera focused its efforts on perfecting its big data pitch for VCs. Yesterday SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier reported that the company closed a massive $65 million series E funding round led by  Accel Partners. Existing investors Greylock Partners, Ignition Partners, In-Q-Tel, and Meritech Capital Partners opted to increase their stake in the company as well.
