Virtualization + Software-Led Infrastructure Attract the Midsize Market

Software-led infrastructure and services, from servers to networks, and storage, is a hot topic right now.  Early this month HP announced the expansion of its Converged Storage architecture to support software-led storage and software-led infrastructure.  Just a few days later at Dell World 2012, Dante Orsini, the senior vice president of business development at cloud company iland, talks about how VMware cloud-based products are helping midsize organizations securely move to the cloud, and how tackling your technologies to do list can simply the business solution (full video below).

In an interview with SiliconAngle’s Founder John Furrier and Wikibon’s Chief Analyst, Dave Vallente, Orsini discusses the recent development at iland. He said number of customers selecting and implementing an iland Cloud environment for a variety of applications. As cloud technology moves further into the mainstream, users’ experience real value in terms of attaining a highly available enterprise IT infrastructure with lower and flexible pricing, speed to market, control and scalability.

Orsini said the company’s main goal is to provide enterprise-class computing to all size businesses with heavy focus on virtualization, which is why the company has formed such a deep partnership with VMWare. Orsini noted a shift in iland’s offering when the partner realized a cloud-based model could make their enterprise solutions consumable.

In a reply to the shift from the “Follow us” cloud model to the “Cloud ready” model, Orsini said CIOs are now more focused to moving their infrastructure, applications and services to the cloud. As a VMware service provider partner, iland is working closely with ISV partners looking to cloud-enable their applications at a much faster rate. In addition, with iland, enterprises can attain the benefits of the software-defined datacenter with on-demand access to a wide variety of applications.

With virtualization and hypervisors reaching maturity in organizations of all sizes, simplifying its management has become the next hurdle for business. Orsini said iland is working with the mid-sized enterprise space where companies have rich investment in VMware technologies.

When asked about “hybrid cloud” future, Orsini explains by leveraging VMware vCloud Connector you get secure access to iland Cloud Services directly from your VMware-based environment. VMware’s vCloud Connector plug-in is a great way to manage resources in the iland cloud from your existing vSphere environment. The product enables rapid deployments by using reusable standardized application configurations. Additionally, you can securely control both environments from your local VMware implementations.

When it comes to competing with industry leader Amazon, Orsini said iland model provides an optimal approach for organizations that have already invested in VMware technology. The infrastructure can be scalable when necessary, and provisioned on demand, unlike the Amazon model where there is no definite SLA. The iland cloud offers substantial cost savings with almost unlimited flexibility.

Orsini went on to discuss his company’s partnership with Dell to offer their new Replication-as-a-Service (RaaS) secure hosted cloud computing infrastructure on Dell EqualLogic storage arrays. With the solution, organizations can securely replicate their data offsite and add an extra level of data security to their disaster recovery strategies.
