CES for the Home: 4K TVs, Game Tablets + More Streams for Cable Cord Cutters

Though the International CES 2013 event hasn’t officially started (the show itself is scheduled to run from January 8-11, 2013),  some of the exhibitors have already laid out their cards.  There’s plenty of eye candy for techies, but for SiliconAngle readers in particular, we’re looking at home entertainment, networking, and the Internet of Things over the next few days.

We’ll kick things off with home entertainment devices that made their way at CES 2013.

Toshiba formally unveiled their L93000 Series Ultra HD 4K LED TVs, which the company stated will be available in three sizes: 58-, 65- and 84-inch versions.  All will sport an ultra slim bezel and gun metal trim and stand, with resolution four times better than the current 1080p TVs available in the market.  It features Toshiba’s  CEVO 4K quad and dual core processor, which makes upscaling content even better, and the ClearScan 240Hz refresh rate for smoother fast motion video.  No news yet on the price of the L93000 Series Ultra HD 4K LED TVs, but it is slated for a summer release.

Toshiba isn’t the only company showcasing a 4K HD TV at CES this year, as Vizio unveiled the XVT Series Ultra High-Definition 70″ Razor LED Smart TV.  The XVT features 3D capabilities with multiple pairs of 3D glasses included, built-in WiFi connectivity for streaming shows from the internet, and comes in a slim or “razor” frame with a 2mm bezel and a metal base and metallic finish.  No news yet on the pricing, but Vizio promises it will come in at a “consumer friendly” price when it is released in the third quarter of this year.

If you’re fond of having friends over for game night and traditional board games just won’t cut it, then Lenovo’s Horizon Table PC may just be what you need to make things even more interesting.  The Horizon is a tablet-desktop hybrid with a 27-inch multi-touch screen running Windows 8.  It has a unique entertainment interface called Aura, which is integrated deeply into Horizon, but users can quickly return to Windows’ serious mode.

Because of its size, the Horizon is best used lying down on its back.  Plus it comes with a set of sliding air hockey paddles, a set of joysticks, and even a large six-sided die, so Lenovo’s clearly looking to invade game night.  Unfortunately, though Lenovo wants the Horizon to be considered as a portable desktop and the ultimate entertainment companion, it only has two hours of battery life.

Popular for making graphics processing units, NVIDIA surprised everyone when they unveiled the Project Shield at CES.  Project Shield is an Android, hand-held gaming console that comes in a clamshell design, complete with joysticks and game control buttons.  Though it’s meant for mobile gaming, it can be hooked to a PC to unlock more powerful games from Steam, the online game catalog.  The five-inch screen has a 720p resolution capable of playing out games and video in the 4k standard.  It features NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 chip, considered amongst the fastest mobile processors in the market.

No new Roku hardware is being showcased at CES this year, but they’re expanding an equally important aspect of their product offering.  Roku now offers some 700 channels for cable cord cutters, and there are even more services slated for this year.  New channels include TMZ, A&E, History Channel, Fox Now, PBS, PBS Kids, BLockbuster on Demand, Dailymotion, iHeartRadio, and Flingo, with new channels launching every month.

Aside from the new channels, Roku also announced that they’ll be expanding “Roku ready” devices.  Coby, Harman Kardon, Hisense, TCL, Voxx, and Westinghouse TVs and AV products will be compatible with the Roku Streaming Stick.
