President Obama Awards National Medal of Technology to IBM Scientists

President Obama will honor three IBM scientists — James J. Wynne, Rangaswamy Srinivasan, and Samuel Blum — with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for the discovery of the underlying technology for LASIK surgery. The award, the country’s most prestigious honor for technological achievement, is being presented for their development of excimer laser surgery, making LASIK and PRK refractive eye surgery possible. more

 

McDonald’s South Africa Installs IBM Social Business Software

McDonald’s South Africa, part of the global food service retailer, is using IBM social business software to facilitate collaboration across its geographically dispersed operations and support expansion into new markets. McDonald’s is working with IBM and its business partner, Knowledge Dimension, to transform the way its almost 200 restaurants and 8,000 employees communicate and collaborate. More

 

Russian Hospital Using IBM PureFlex to Improve Patient Care, Power Advanced Medical Research

Russia’s Dmitri Rogachev Federal Scientific-Clinical Center for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Immunology is installing a new IBM PureFlex integrated system, the first of its kind to be deployed in Russia. It will use the system to improve patient care and draw insight from its clinical data and to support the continued expansion of its research and patient care facilities. PureFlex technology allows rapid deployment, getting crucial medical applications up and running faster than competitive systems. More

 

Cisco to Release Latest Mobile Internet Traffic Forecast

Cisco will announce the latest findings of its “Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update” (VNI) on February 6 at 11 a.m. JST at the Kazan Kaikan Conference Centre in Tokyo (February 5 at 9 p.m. EST). The event will also include discussion of the implications of surging bandwidth demands on service provider networks, consumers, business services, and policies for the radio spectrum. Cisco Schedules Q2 Results Call

Cisco has scheduled a conference call for February 13 at 4:30 p.m. EST (1:30 p.m. PST) to announce its 2Q2013 financial results for the quarter ending January 26. The results will be released over Marketwire and the European Business and Technical Wire after the close of market on February 13. More

 

NetApp Schedules Q3 Financial Webcast

NetApp has scheduled a conference call and webcast to discuss its 3Q2013 results for February 13. The call for the financial community will be at 2:30 p.m. PST (5:30 EST) and will be webcast live. More

 

Broadcom Announces Record Revenues

Broadcom has announced record revenue in each of its three business groups and record cash flow from operations for its unaudited financial results for 4Q and the full fiscal year ending December 31, 2012. Its total GAAP revenue for the quarter was US $2.08 billion and its diluted EPS US $0.43, $0.04 better than First Call consensus. Net revenue for the year was $8.01 billion, an 8.4 percent increase from the year before. Net GAAP income for the year was $719 million, or $1.25 per share. More

 

Broadcom Announces 10 Percent Quarterly Dividend Increase

Broadcom Corp. has announced that its board of directors has approved a 10 percent increase in the quarterly cash dividend to US $0.11 per share per quarter, payable to holders of its Class A and Class B common stock. The dividend will be paid on March 4 to stockholders of record on the close of business on February 15. More

 

Hortonworks Achieves Quality Assurance and Certification for Rackspace Private Cloud

The Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), the industry’s only enterprise-ready, 100 percent Open Source platform powered by Apache Hadoop, has achieved certification for the Rackspace Private Cloud. HDP is the only Apache Hadoop distribution to receive this certification. Thousands of organizations in more than 125 countries on all five continents have downloaded the Rackspace Open Cloud since it was introduced in August 2012. More

 

Nimble Storage Expands into Singapore

Nimble Storage has opened an office in Singapore as a strategic foundation for expansion into the rest of Asia. Singapore is the company’s second office in AsiaPac and is part of a targeted investment plan to expand operations as it moves towards an IPO. It opened its first AsiaPac office in Sydney in September. More
