Rugby Football Union uses IBM Analytics to Improve Fan Experience

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) and IBM have signed a strategic five-year agreement to implement a leading analytics solution, the IBM TryTracker, to provide fans with real-time insights into the game, including information about individual performance by players. IBM’s Predictive Analytics software will analyze historic an current rugby data provided by Opta, the world’s leading sports data provider, to develop in-game stats. That will give viewers access to insights that will heighten their understanding of what to watch for in each game. More

Dell Software has introduced advice on how organizations can intelligently empower “citizen developers” using SharePoint. Gartner predicts that citizen developers will build at least 25 percent of new business applications by 2014. Microsoft Attacks Google Search for Valentine’s Day

Microsoft apparently is running a campaign this week to convince people to switch from Google search to Bing. Noting that a recent survey by Bing and Impulse Research Corp. found that a surprising one-in-ten people have ended a relationship on St. Valentine’s Day, it is trying to convince people to break up with Google. Its argument:”You wouldn’t keep dating someone who isn’t trustworthy, so why use a search engine known for serving its interests over your own?” More

Flash storage entrepreneur WhipTail has announced 300 percent year-to-year revenue growth, attributed to the addition of 130 new customers in 2012 and a growing strong presence in government, healthcare, and education. The company also expanded into new verticals including chemical manufacturing, medical research, and news publishing. “We believe that 2012 was the year that WhipTail and flash hit the tipping point,” said company CEO Dan Crain. US Oil Output Rising Dramatically Reports Ernst & Young

The United States saw a “dramatic surge” in domestic oil production in 2012 and be the largest source of new oil growth worldwide in 2013, aided by the shale boom, says Ernst & Young in its Oil & Gas Center’s Quarterly outlook. However, surpassing Saudi Arabia as the top oil producer by 2020 will be a challenge. More
