Changing the World: Big Data Deep Dive

.

“With Big Data, it’s become, not just about the technology, it’s about the business impact and I think that’s the one thing that I’m really excited about,” Furrier said about the Big Data trend. “What we’re seeing across the board, every industry is being disrupted by these new technologies and it’s probably one of the most exciting things I’ve seen in my entire year.”

In the first episode of Big Data Deep Dive, they discussed how the power of Big Data is being harnessed by individuals to monitor and improve their well being, by businesses to keep up with the trend and deliver better products and services, and by cities such as Rio de Janeiro to better protect its citizens, respond to real-time events such as natural disasters or road accidents, with the ultimate goal of improving people’s health as well in preparation for the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

But what does it all mean?

.

“Big Data has gone from this hype, this concept, to now its practical realities of Big Data,” Vellante said.  “Everybody wants to implement Big Data because it’s bringing competitive advantage.  You know the tagline, ‘Data is the new Oil’?  What does that mean?  That means, increasingly, it’s gonna be about the algorithms that you write, how you packaged data, how you distribute data and how you monetize it, that’s gonna give you competitive advantage.  So where people are at today, they’re struggling with how to figure out ways to bring in unstructured and structured information and how to package it and distribute it and actually make money with it.”

This is a topic we’ve been exploring for the past three years, and it only grows in relevance as a new ecosystem emerges around Big Data tools and areas of application.  It’s expected to be a nearly $50 billion business by 2017, according to a recent forecast from Wikibon’s team of analysts.

Other Big Data trends discussed in this six-part series include a look at the market’s current leaders, social responsibility, skill development and future expectations.  See the series in its entirety, along with other great interviews, analysis and our daily NewsDesk show here on our YouTube channel.
