Summly Already Gone from iTunes : Here’s 3 Alternatives

Yahoo! acquired Summly this week, an iPhone app that delivers news fast, easily and beautifully by providing users with concise summaries of online content.  According to reports, the acquisition totaled to $30 million, which involves the Summly team moving in with Yahoo as the app will be abolished and the algorithm used by Summly incorporated in Yahoo’s mobile experience.  As for Summly creator Nick D’Aloisio, he will only be joining Yahoo for 18 months as he still have a lot of creative years ahead of him, and we’ll probably see more revolutionary apps from him in the near future.

Summly summary

In March 2011, D’Aloisio created Trimit, an app that summarizes e-mails, blog posts and more into 1,000, 500, or 140-character summaries and be able to share it via SMS, email, Facebook, Twitter in .txt form in just a few clicks or shakes of your iPhone.  In July of the same year, Apple named Trimit as a noteworthy app on the App Store.  The success of Trimit has attracted the attention of Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing who invested $300,000 in venture capital funding.  D’Aloisio knew that Trimit wasn’t perfect, so with positive and negative feedback in mind and using Ka-shing’s investment, Trimit was relaunched as the news summarizing aggregator, Summly, in December 2011.

3 Alternatives to Summly

.

Now that Summly is going away, many of you will be looking for a replacement.  Here’s three great alternatives to consider:

Circa

This iPhone app gives you the summary of stories without fluff, filler, or commentary as Circa’s editors gather the top stories and break them down to their essential points such as facts, quotes, photos, and formats everything specifically for the iPhone.

Follow a story that interests you and Circa will keep you updated as to what’s new with that story.  Instead of recommending you a new story, Circa adds a new point, also in a concise format, to the story you are following instead of giving you the whole article to read.  Circa also allows you to share news points or summaries and whole articles on Facebook and Twitter and finding the source of the news you’re interested in.

Wavii

The app described as “making Facebook out of Google.”  In the simplest way, Wavii is like Facebook but instead of people, it deals with news.  You can follow topics on Wavii or other Wavii users to get the latest news about the things you are interested in.  When something happens, you’ll know about as quickly as your friend updates his Facebook status.

Wavii also provides you with related content such as images, videos, related data, and other rich content for each event in your feed.  You can also @mention other Wavii users to kick off the discussion.  You can login using Facebook, Twitter or your e-mail address.

NextDraft – The Day’s Most Fascinating News

The title of the app says it all – it delivers the top ten most fascinating news stories, but it’s delivered in a summarized form so catching up with the most talked about news is as easy as glancing at your iPhone’s screen.  You can also save news for later reading by using Readability, Instapaper, Pocket and saving articles is done in a click.

Aside from that, the day’s latest viral videos and photos are also presented to users.  What makes NextDraft different from Summly is that instead of using an algorithm to aggregate and summarize news, it uses Dave Pell to deliver summarized news for readers.
