WANdisco, a relatively new name in the Big Data space, just unveiled the latest release of its Hadoop distribution. WANdisco Distro (WDD) version features a simplified interface, and introduces support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2, in addition to RedHat Enterprise Linux and CentOS.
“The integration of Hadoop into the mainstream enterprise environment is increasing, and continual communication with our customers confirms their requirements — ease of deployment and management as well as support for market leading operating systems,” said David Richards, CEO of WANdisco. “With this release, we’re delivering on those requirements with a thoroughly tested and certified release of WDD.”
WANdisco is a San Ramon, CA-based provider of active-active data replication solutions that has been selling clustering software since 2005. The company only emerged from its home turf in January this year, when it shelled out over $5 million for a Big Data startup called AltoStor. The company launched WDD less than two weeks after the deal was announced.
What sets the distribution apart from most competing offerings is that it comes pre-integrated with WANdisco’s homegrown active-active replication software. The company is licensing the technology to Hortonworks, which has also incorporated it into its Hadoop distro.
WANdisco hopes to compete in the overcrowded Big Data space by maintaining a technological edge over rivaling vendors. Late last month, the firm filed three patent applications covering techniques that “enhance security, reliability, flexibility and efficiency in the field of distributed computing.”
